When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic.

Good story, good voice and we'll written. I am not very fond of the romantic spiel and the endless developments of Strike's leg. But apart from that there are countless observations that made me smile in recognition. There is a proper rythm in de sentences and paragraphs. I read the book without putting it down from irritation or whatever :-))) O, because of all the quotes I bought the book by Henrik Ibsen. So that's the next read!

Toby is a happy-go-lucky charmer who's dodged a scrape at work and is celebrating with friends when the night takes a turn that will change his life - he surprises two burglars who beat him and leave him for dead. Struggling to recover from his injuries, beginning to understand that he might never be the same man again, he takes refuge at his family's ancestral home to care for his dying uncle Hugo. Then a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden - and as detectives close in, Toby is forced to face the possibility that his past may not be what he has always believed.

A very good read. Difficult to put down, mainly because of the many twists and turns. But it has depth as well, it does not feel like the author just wanted to be smart. Characters are fleshed out and believable. Well written with a nice a flow and the performance is very nice to. I will look for more books of the same author.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all. Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic.

I enjoyed every story. That never happened to me before. Well written, original and interesting. Sometimes with some of Murakami's supernatural stuff, but mostly not. Easy to finish the book, it wash a shame when the last story ended. All in all a very good read!

A top-ranking Iranian military official is blown up while trying to defect to the West. An investigative journalist is arrested and imprisoned for writing an article critical of the Turkish government. An Iranian nuclear scientist is assassinated on the streets of Tehran. These three incidents, seemingly unrelated, have one crucial link. Each of the three had been recently recruited by Western intelligence, before being removed or killed.

On 11 March 2011, a massive earthquake sent a 120-foot-high tsunami smashing into the coast of Northeast Japan. By the time the sea retreated, more than 18,000 people had been crushed, burned to death, or drowned. It was Japan's greatest single loss of life since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. It set off a national crisis and the meltdown of a nuclear power plant. And even after the immediate emergency had abated, the trauma of the disaster continued to express itself in bizarre and mysterious ways.

Japan is so different from western culture, it is difficult to understand the often meek attitude towards government. The writer tells the story in such a way that you can see why officials and companies get away with their refusal to change their ways. Well written, with compassion and distance at the same time.
I will never forget some of the stories in this book!

"The Queen of Spades" is the best known and probably the best of all Russian short stories. It confronts the great riches of a few and the impoverishment of the many in the form of the assistant to the fabulously rich and old Countess; Hermann, who seeks great wealth through any means; and the countess's knowledge of how to win one's fortune on three cards. The denouement is worthy of being considered one of the finest in literature.

Nearly two weeks early, on March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. From that single beginning, Ferguson's life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. Four identical Fergusons made of the same DNA, four boys who are the same boy, go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. Family fortunes diverge. Athletic skills and sex lives and friendships and intellectual passions contrast.

Enjoyed the 4 stories immensely. Written beautiful, it pulls the reader on and on. Paul has a great voice and the rythms in the sentences come alive. I got to know the fifties and sixties in the USA much better as well. No doubt I will read it again some day!
