Censured at the Council of Nikaea for his flagrant use of sorcery, Magnus the Red and his Thousand Sons Legion retreat to their homeworld of Prospero to continue their use of the arcane arts in secret. But when the ill-fated primarch forsees the treachery of Warmaster Horus and warns the Emperor with the very powers he was forbidden to use, the Master of Mankind dispatches fellow primarch Leman Russ to attack Prospero itself.

Going through this book a second time has made me appreciate the tragedy even more.
Everything about this book is simply perfect. Writing, content, length, character development...

A must read!

After a long and gruelling conflict, the traitors at last close upon Terra. But time is dwindling for an attack. Both Guilliman and the Lion are returning with all haste, and their armies could turn the tide. The hosts of the Warmaster must unite, for only then can they attack the Throneworld itself. While Mortarion is sent on ahead as the fleet’s vanguard, it falls to Lorgar and Perturabo to marshal Fulgrim and Angron, both now elevated to daemonhood and perhaps beyond even the will of the Warmaster to command.

The story never went into detail when there was ample opportunity to do so. Horus is betraying his father, his beliefs, his ideals, he is obviously stricken with grief. In parts caused by Russ‘ weapon in parts because he is about to take the final step towards Chaos. This could and should have been more detailed.
Missed opportunities all around.

I will keep it concise:
- Well developed characters
- Sister of Silence
- Terran politician
- Custodes
- Well developed story

The story is told from the perspective of the 3 characters and is thus informed and influenced by each respective character. The event in which they are all involved gives the listener deep insight into the inner workings of the Imperium and the multitude of factions therein. At first I thought this book would be all about politics and the dealings of the 3 characters but, without spoiling, the story is so much more interesting.

While I started with Horus Heresy novels and got used to the story-telling there (character introduction, obstacle, dramatic build up, huge fight, good/bad ending) I really enjoyed this book much much more. It has more depth and is more immersive than almost all the Horus Heresy Novels I read so far (apart from Thousand Sons - damn that book is awesome).

All in all, you not only should but MUST listen to/read this book.
