This sequel to the Hugo and Audie Award nominated METAtropolis features interconnected stories by today’s top writers of speculative fiction – performed by a galaxy of Star Trek stars. As the mid-20th century approaches, the Pacific Northwest has been transformed - politically, economically, and ecologically - into the new reality of Cascadia. Conspiracies and secrets threaten the tenuous threads of society. And the End of Days seems nearer than ever.

This is as far from space battles as it gets. The stories, by various authors, are more like think-tank speculations about a future where most economies have collapsed due to millennial failings, and interesting new sociatal structures are on the rise. Topics include virtual nations, the tearing down obsolete roads, doomsday cults, extreme environmentalism, genetic engineering, and people caught up in all of this.

Despite the intellectual bent, the stories are always engaging and personal, though it can take a while to get ones bearings.

The speakers, of Star Trek fame, are great throughout.

In summary, philosophically inclined readers might enjoy this book a lot

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

I liked Rowling's Harry Potter series, but it was far from my favorite fantasy fiction. "The Casual Vacancy" is a different genre, gritty real-life stuff; however, the key change is not in the genre, but in the vastly improved writing. The characters are diverse and interesting, and among the most well-written I have ever seen. Rowling masterfully and effortlessly presents deep psychological issues. The story in the small-town setting is as entertaining as it is harrowing. Rowling clearly is a great observer of real people, and obviously enjoyed herself while she let her characters inner workings - or abysses - drive the plot. This book is a must read.

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves.

Fairly complex yet reasonable plot that starts leisurely and shifts into overdrive further into the book. Vivid characters and descriptions. Michael Page's narration is very good. World building is not the main focus, but there are very interesting details that made me curious about the world's (pre-)history. The story is self-contained, but there are more books. I'll get the next one instantly.

The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate.

Before I start: I've read many books by Sanderson. Some of those loved (the Mistborn Trilogy, Elantris, and the first Stormlight book). Some of them not so much. His weaker books tend to feel a bit like tabletop role playing games with slightly cardboardy characters. The predecessors of "Bands if Mourning" I found good but not great.

Now for the "Bands of Mourning": everything about this book is great! The characters come to life like never before. The world building comes into full fruition. There are great plots twists. There is a great variety of parts, some mystery, some action, son diplomacy, some history, some romance. The plot has a real conclusion, no cheap cliffhanger. Then again, there are tantalizing open ends, creating a yearning for then next book. If you like Sanderson, you should definitely read this book.

The moving end to the tale of the Farseers, in which kingdoms must stand or fall on the beat of a dragon's wings, or a Fool's heart. A small and sadly untried coterie – the old assassin Chade, the serving-boy Thick, Prince Dutiful, and his reluctant Skillmaster, Fitz – sail towards the distant island of Aslevjal. There they must fulfil the Narcheska’s challenge to her betrothed: to lay the head of the dragon Icefyre, whom legends tell is buried there deep beneath the ice, upon her hearth.

One of the greatest fears with book series is that the author drops the ball as new volumes appear. Not here. In this third part of the trilogy, Robin Hobb keeps the story focussed and gripping. The last parts of the book touched me like few books have. What struck me in particular is how all characters who important in Fitz's life get involved and treated with satisfying depth.I kept on thinking about this book for a long while after reading.

This book is short, fast-paced and full of interesting plot-twists. There are several interesting characters, and they are fleshed out as good as the space allows. Considering the brevity of the book, a lot of great plot happens. The fictitious world is not described in as much detail as in longer fantasy books by Abercrombie or others, but that does not matter for the plot. The prose is beautiful and intense. The book feels less, how shall I put this, dirty or sarcastic than Abercrombie's previous offerings. Probably because it is classified as young adult fiction. And it seems to be set in a different world. But I enjoyed it just as much.

Fazit: Gute Unterhaltung
