William von Becker ran one of the largest privately held investment banks in North America, until the bottom fell out, and the whole edifice was demonstrated to be a fraud. After von Becker dies in prison, financial investigator Jason Stafford is hired by his family. There is still a lot of missing money out there, he's told, and they want Stafford to find it before the Feds do - and certain other parties, some of whom are nowhere near as scrupulous in their methods. Bad things start happening to the people Stafford talks to. Soon bad things are happening to him as well.

Würden Sie dieses Hörbuch einem Freund empfehlen? Wenn ja, was würden Sie ihm dazu sagen?

I think this is a very unusual setting that still works. Financial stuff is normally as boring as watching paint dry but the author explains it all so simply that everyone gets it and finds it amazingly interesting.

Welche Figur hat Ihnen am besten gefallen? Warum?

I like the boy best. It is an unusual family setting.

Wie hat Ihnen John Beford Lloyd als Sprecher gefallen? Warum?

The speaker is very good. He manages to speak in distinctly different voices without sounding silly i.e.when he is talking as a woman.

This book has to be savoured but it is hard as you want to rush on.

It is not necessary to have read the first book but it is better because otherwise you might not want to listen to the first book.

Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighbourhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure's agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

Was hat Ihnen das Hörerlebnis von All the Light We Cannot See besonders unterhaltsam gemacht?

"All the Light We Cannot See" tells a story from the view point of two very different teenagers, one a blind French girl the other one a German boy attending a elite SS-boarding school that are in the end connected by their love for science and life. Both live in a completely different world at the same time, the 30ties and the Second World War. Both are raised in very different ways and still they meet. I don't want to spoil the book for you by telling the story but I can assure you I haven't read a book that was as touching as this for a long time.

In a dusty postwar summer in rural Warwickshire, a doctor is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at twenty to nine. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life?

A bit more action and this book would be a page turner.

Somehow it is not believable that the Lord of the manor wouldn't turn to a minister for getting help. it is nearly unbearable to watch the downslide of the family without putting up at least some fight.

Wie hat Ihnen Simon Vance als Sprecher gefallen? Warum?

He is definitely brilliant. He can speak the doctor, the maid, the lover and what ever with such a convincing clarity.

no way

It is ok for listeners that are very patient and willing to listen to dialogues which are well written and who are not keen on some action.

Somehow I thought that this book was a bit more sublte. This is a book that has very simple characters: The noble Indian that is still cruel enought to kill defenceless enemies, the beautiful squaw, the wise old Indian, subhuman chinks etc. Moreover (but may be this was just my copy) the speaker repeated himself quite often literally.

Laurel Lefkow reads the stunning new novel from the bestselling author of Girl with a Pearl Earring. When modest Quaker Honor Bright sails from Bristol with her sister, she is fleeing heartache for a new life in America, far from home. But tragedy leaves her alone and vulnerable, torn between two worlds and dependent on the kindness of strangers. Life in 1850s Ohio is precarious and unsentimental. The sun is too hot, the thunderstorms too violent, the snow too deep. The roads are spattered with mud and spit. The woods are home to skunks and porcupines and raccoons.

Normally I only read thrillers and this is none but nevertheless there is enough suspense even for an adrenal junkie like me. Moreover you learn a lot about quakers and life in the states and the peculiar institution slavery.

Sometimes a man can be redeemed. But not in the way he expects. Jason Stafford is a former Wall Street hotshot who made some bad moves, paid the price with two years in prison, and is now trying to put his life back together. He’s unemployable, until an investment firm asks him to look into possible problems left by a junior trader who died recently in an accident. What he discovers is big - there are problems, all right, the kind that get you killed. But it’s not his only concern. Stafford has another quest as well: to reclaim his five-year-old son, "the Kid", from his unstable ex-wife, and then learn just what it means to make a life with him.

Bought it just out of a whim but it turned out to be super entertaining. It offers suspense, a description of the inner life of teenagers (I can't believe for a second that those kids are only 11!), is funny and has a gifted reader. No one else can say uhhuh with so much feeling. It reminded me sometimes of Steven King.
