Actors not always up to the task

This is one of my favourite German dramas, but the actors' performances in this recording are very mixed. Louise's father was convincingly furious but displayed few other emotions. And I did not really feel the passion between Louise and Ferdinand. My favourite character in this adaptation was perhaps the President, Ferdinand's father.

Well-paced, unobtrusive detective story

This is a well-paced, charmingly old-fashioned detective story set in present-day London. If it wasn't for the occasional mobile phones and laptops, one might even forget that it was all that modern. The plot and the author's storytelling are rather timeless and unobtrusive. In our age of hyper-violent thrillers full of organised crime, sex, drugs and shady police officers, this story may seem too tame to some readers, but I enjoyed every bit of it.

I am finding this audio book very difficult to review because the plot is very unusual. It is an interesting blend of detective story and vampire lore, and although that is very appealing in theory, it can sometimes be too much to take in practice. As I usually listen to audiobooks for relaxation after a tough day in the office, I very clearly lack the focus to follow such a creative narrative. I had to restart the audiobook several times as I could not grasp all the details at once. Besides, the reader's accent(s) were difficult to understand when I was getting tired. This storyline deserves more attention than I can spare on an average Friday night. So if you are looking for light entertainment, go for Agatha Christie. This is a world of its own.

Will listen again and again...

This stunning collection of Oscar Wilde plays is one of my Audible favourites. I first listened to it on a crowded flight from Dublin to Zurich and arrived relaxed and smiling. The actors deliver great performances of Wilde's wit and humour. I am deeply in love with all those memorable characters...

Great old recordings but too expensive

The recordings are great, but this audiobook runs for less than an hour. I think that's rather too expensive for a 1950s radio show.

Boring and tedious

This is awful. An endless Wikipedia article. Dates and names. That's all. No narrative flow. Any real medieval chronicle is more engaging than this. The only thing I liked was the reader's voice.

These crime stories are slow-paced and features many weird upper-class characters, but they are thoroughly entertaining. It is sometimes hard to guess if these stories are set in the 40s or 80s as all of them are populated by Lords, Ladies, butlers and maids. So if you're into social revolution and the rise of the working classes -- this isn't your cup of tea. But if you can appreciate human tragedy even in its most aristocratic forms, you'll enjoy these recordings as much as I did.

Great cast, nicely recorded. I am listening to this audio book again and again when I am stressed out and need some escapism.

When the boom first came out, I attended a public reading with the author in Germany. Katja Kettu read in Finnish, afterwards a translator read the same passages in German. In between, there were stunning performances of Finnish tango. I loved Kettu's Gothic outfit and her voice, and the German translation was extremely touching and powerful. So I was really looking forward to this audiobook in English. But although the reader has a pleasant voice, the audiobook was disappointing. This is due to the awful English translation. Besides, the reader is struggling with all foreign language expressions. As a native speaker of German, I sometimes had to listen twice to understand phrases in German.
