Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Inglis' reading of Tolkien's The Hobbit -- including him singing the songs -- is a delight. Honestly, it feels like Tolkien sitting at your bedside table and telling you a story of lost times.

Stephen Fry does an wonderful job in reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories and novels. Fry's forewords are insightful: as always, he knows what he is talking about. Indeed, he is a true Sherlockian.

Gaiman's short novella was great on paper but this adaptation is tremendous. The new prologue with James McAvoy's reappearance as Richard Mayhew is great and connects both adaptations wonderfully.

Shadow Moon has been away from America for nearly two years. His nights are broken with dangerous dreams. Sometimes he almost believes he doesn't care if he ever returns home. In the Highlands of Scotland, where the sky is pale white and it feels as remote as any place can possibly be, the beautiful and the wealthy gather at a grand old house in the glen. And when the strange local doctor offers him work at the party, Shadow is intrigued.

If you loved or - if this in possible, I am unsure - simply enjoyed 'American Gods', I recommend you listening to Gaiman reading his novella. The odyssey continues and it is simply great.

Shadow Moon has been on the road a while now, but he can't walk any farther tonight, not with the rain lashing down. Gratefully he heads home with a nice English couple, who offer a box room, hot whisky and local tales. But when the man collapses en route, Shadow realises that something about this place has been left untold. Something ancient, something within the very walls of the village. Something shadowing them all.

Gaiman does absolutely everything right by being reading his own novella. But you should have a go on 'American Gods' beforehand. (Thank me later!)
