Kickass Victorian ladie(s) navigating a world of rigid class and gender roles and grappling with the implication of Darwin's theory of evolution. All spiced up with a maybe magical maybe psychotropic mystery plant.

Hardinge blends historical events and fantasy quite masterfully and manages to keep you constantly on your toes as well. Plus the Author interview at the end was a nice little treat that caused me to add a couple more books to my TBR.

Inside a small Yorkshire parsonage, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne Brontë have invented a game called Glass Town, where their toy soldiers fight Napoleon and no one dies. This make-believe land helps the four escape from a harsh reality: Charlotte and Emily are being sent away to a dangerous boarding school, a school they might not return from. But on this Beastliest Day, the day Anne and Branwell walk their sisters to the train station, something incredible happens.

An amazingly intricate story that seamlessly weaves real historical events and people in with the Brontë sibling's fictional world. As always Valente's writing is deep and whimsical at the same time and Kate Reading as Narrator is a perfect fit.
