2 Stunden habe ich durchgehalten, aber es passiert leider nichts. Technisches Geplapper und keine Spur von Storytelling. Leider nicht meine Art von Geschichte, obwohl ich gute Science-Fiction-Stories sehr gerne mag.

I gave this one over 3 hours but then I could no longer stand all the sentimental flashbacks. It's just much too emotional to be credible. Is that what happens when one sees too many cheesy Hollywood movies? Sorry. I've read and heard many great Stephen Kings but this one just kept me cringing. The story was building up nicely all the time, great handiwork, but when nothing major happened after over 3 hours, I tuned out. Perhaps I wasn't patient enough for the big thing to come.

Isserley spends most of her time driving. But why is she so interested in picking up hitchhikers? And why are they always male, well-built, and alone? An utterly unpredictable and macabre mystery, Michel Faber's debut is an outstanding piece of fiction that will stay with you long after you have finished listening.

A tremendous book superbly read. The listener is kept wondering what it's all about for a long time but that just adds to the great story. I had to keep thinking of Clockwork Orange and Brave New World. Real characters, understatement, fantastic accents and an uncomfortable story. A real piece of literature.

The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

This really is one of Clarke's best efforts. Unbelievable it was written in the 1950s. This is utterly believable. Well read and hugely entertaining.

Of the 7 novel sby Arthur C. Clarke I have read/heard so far this is the least compelling to me. Unfortunately the reader does a poor job too compared to the other readers. The references to the Buddha and his ideas are embarrassing and one really can tell the 1950s style. The language is much too flowery, the characters and not credible and the story is not the greatest. Compared to Childhood's End it is a disappointment. But you can't get it right every time! I'll try the next one by this great author.

Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer-simulated war games at the Battle School; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. Ender is the result of decades of genetic experimentation, Earth's attempt to make the military genius that the planet needs in its all-out war with an alien enemy. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast. This, the author's definitive edition, also includes an original postscript written and recorded by Orson Scott Card himself.

The story starts off very well. The listener is intrigued and always in support of the underdog. Then things become more and more unrealistic, unbelievable and even childish. Having 9-year-olds discuss politics is very far-fetched. Unfortunately this is then combined with overly prolonged US-style emotional outbreaks which detracted from the story. At that point I got the impression of a nerd spinning stories and I lost interest. The presentation and readers, however, do a superb job.

In the din and stink that is Cannery Row a colourful blend of misfits - gamblers, whores, drunks, bums and artists - survive side by side in a jumble of adventure and mischief. Lee Chong, the astute owner of the well-stocked grocery store, is also the proprietor of the Palace Flophouse that Mack and his troupe of good-natured 'boys' call home. Dora, of the flaming orange hair and taste for Nile-green dresses, runs the brothel with clockwork efficiency and a generous heart.

At first I was irritated by the seeming lack of a big story line but then soon became enthralled with the characters and mood created by John Steinbeck. He creates a world of lost souls who find the comfort they can get in each other. Underneath though one can feel a tone of despair disguised by optimism. Entertainingly performed and a great listen. It's books like this one never forgets.
