The story:

An Imperial general has defected to the enemy, and the secrets he carries could spell the end of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and a small team from the Tanith First must infiltrate an enemy-held world and gain the trust of the local underground, all the while trying desperately to avoid the ever-present taint of Chaos. Their mission: to stop the traitor general from revealing his secrets - by any means necessary.

It's a special mission for the first company of the ghosts. Specialists work behind enemy lines.
It's almost a tribute to the scouts, like the short story of M'kol's engagement with the lost Dreadnought.
But it's not just scouts. It is also, especially for me since I really like the 40k lore, a very interesting trip onto a captured world.
The story offers glimpses at the working of a chaos world, how it's administrated and controlled. And it is not all just gory pits of agony like in some of the stories about the worlds in side the Eye.
But anyways. It is a very interesting and well told story. More character development for the main characters.
I'd deeply suggest this one.

Loved the resistance aspect and small infiltration team in a chaos infested world, the impact on them and the many mini stories along the main plot. Brilliant

This was by far my favourite Gaunt novel so far. It stands out from the previous books as it’s a small team mission, just some famous ghosts and no army. That leaves even more room for a great story.

Don't get me wrong, I love all novels of the series.
But this one... Dark covered ops on a chaos world. And thanks to the supreme narrator... You are kind of there with the ghosts. Experiencing all the weird stuff and all the dark circumstances...
What a trip!
I inhaled the whole novel in less then 24 hours.
So you see: Highly recommend audiobook!
