À propos de ce titre
From the bestselling author of The Bomber Mafia, learn what sets high achievers apart—from Bill Gates to the Beatles—in this seminal work from "a singular talent" (New York Times Book Review).

In this stunning book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"—the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

Avis de la critique

"In the vast world of nonfiction writing, Malcolm Gladwell is as close to a singular talent as exists today...Outliers is a pleasure to read and leaves you mulling over its inventive theories for days afterward."—David Leonhardt, New York Times Book Review
"The explosively entertaining Outliers might be Gladwell's best and most useful work yet...There are both brilliant yarns and life lessons here: Outliers is riveting science, self-help, and entertainment, all in one book."—Gregory Kirschling, Entertainment Weekly
"No other book I read this year combines such a distinctive prose style with truly thought-provoking content. Gladwell writes with a high degree of dazzle but at the same time remains as clear and direct as even Strunk or White could hope for."—Atlanta Journal Constitution

Gladwell correctly points out how people's success is formed by many variables, including many that we don't have any influence on. However, 2 things aren't cool:
1. He discredits anyone from his/her achievements. Any personal character trade, action or event in one's life may be ascribed to something one didn't have any influence on (upbringing, culture, what not). And actually it doesn't matter if that trade/action/event lead to success or failure. Gladwell discredits but at the same time takes away responsibility from people.
2. He makes some connections that he doesn't provide any proof of.

Interesting arguments to the story of success. The story of success is much more complex than we are often told.

I believe that from birth human beings are very competitive both biologically and socially. part of human happiness lies in achieving our goals. Society tells us who the leaders or achievers are, but the concept is very limited and what society tells us is that they are and we are not. I loved this book because it explains success as the sum of several factors and it is not necessarily the factor of meritocracy or intelligence. I think as a society we have neglected that aspect, hh that we tell the new generations to pursue excellence, triumph and success, but we tell them a simplistic story. This book gave me more peace in my life and taught me to have a better judgement about life and my own goals, to not be so hard on myself and to understand more about the society I live in and the life I have. highly recommended.

It gave me peace in my life
