À propos de ce titre
As China reclaims its position as a world power, Imperial Twilight looks back to tell the story of the country’s last age of ascendance and how it came to an end in the nineteenth-century Opium War.

As one of the most potent turning points in the country’s modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today’s China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to “open” China even as China’s imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country’s decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China’s advantage. The book paints an enduring portrait of an immensely profitable—and mostly peaceful—meeting of civilizations that was destined to be shattered by one of the most shockingly unjust wars in the annals of imperial history. Brimming with a fascinating cast of British, Chinese, and American characters, this riveting narrative of relations between China and the West has important implications for today’s uncertain and ever-changing political climate.

Even as a non-native speaker this audio book was great. I thought it would be on the more difficult side but it was a breeze to listen to. The speaker is great as well. Very interesting story about the opium wars. Recommended!

Great storytelling

Charmingly personal, this book lays out not just the events that prelude the opium war but the character cast that collided to make this deeply unnecessary tragedy happen. Rich in anecdotes and yet focused on a clear logical progression towards this picotal historical moment, this book is both very entertaining and very informative.

The speaker is very clear, carries an empathetic tone in the often tragic or ironic personal histories that pepper the book, and pronounces Chinese names in a way that is comprehensible and consistent (I do not speak Mandarin and cannot judge any deeper than that).

Highly recommended!

Excellent history, personal and informative

I came into this knowing next to nothing on the subject. For me this book has brought the world of early 19th Century China to life. The way the author switches the narrative from British to Chinese imperial perspective is very informative and refreshing.

Although naively, I feel like understand some of China's current political and economic initiatives better through this history. Trying to take 18th Century Britain's role through its expanding trade networks.

Sometimes American involvement is discussed even when not overly important but it doesn't detriment. Although, bringing in other actors such as France, Japan or the Catholic Portuguese and their missionaries would have been interesting.

I wish he would have discussed the Imperial reaction and understanding of the war and its consequences in more depth rather than just focus on the local officials in this section. I also wish the book were longer so it could have provided an epilogue introducing the second opium war.

Extremely interesting and excellently delivered

The liberal moralistic view clouds a very interesting and important Story. The central question he asked: why was it morally acceptable to fight the opium war? Is answered in seconds: because it brought profit. But the real question that he answered accidentally: why was it not fought earlier? Is much more important

A mid retelling of a fascinating story
