A hopeful invitation for environmental change

As the Earth undergoes profound environmental changes and the powers-that-be ignore them, many of us feel disempowered and at a loss for how to process and move forward. The conversation around environmentalism has become inaccessible to many and has ignored the essential role that cultural, racial, and social equity play in our planet's survival. Isaias Hernandez, an environmental educator, storyteller, and founder of Queer Brown Vegan, makes environmental literacy accessible to everyone, especially those curious to unpack their understanding of the climate crisis.

Dear Environmentalist serves as both a primer and a call to action, empowering readers with the information they need to advocate for a flourishing world. Filled with hope, Hernandez centers the essential role of community in the quest for repair and progress, showing that passion and knowledge can create true, lasting change.

Critics' reviews

“Dear Environmentalist is a love letter to anyone searching for their place in the environmental movement. With tenderness, vulnerability, and a deep commitment to justice, Isaias reminds us that environmentalism is not only about protecting the planet. It is about caring for one another, honoring where we come from, and imagining the worlds we deserve. This book leaves readers feeling seen, hopeful, and ready to care more deeply.”—Leah Thomas, Founder of Intersectional Environmentalist and author of Earth As Mother
"This is a book about reality, as much as any physics or chemistry textbook. Isaias Hernandez has worked hard to understand the world we live in, and is working hard to change it, on many fronts. May these compelling words draw many others in to this great work!"—Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun
“At a time when so many people are searching for their place in the climate movement, Dear Environmentalist offers a compassionate and hopeful invitation, rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a place in shaping our collective future. Isaias reminds us that building a more just world begins by creating a movement where we can all see ourselves and our role within it.”—Wawa Gatheru, Founder and Executive Director of Black Girl Environmentalist
"Tender, fierce, and unapologetically rooted. Isaias Hernandez shows that environmentalism belongs to those who grew up breathing what others refused to. A field guide for loving this world fiercely."—Dr. Jessica Hernandez, author of Fresh Banana Leaves and Founder of Earth Daughters
“After reading Dear Environmentalist, you will never think of environmental justice as someone else’s problem again. Written with the passion only those who have experienced injustice firsthand can impart, Isaias Hernandez brings to light the challenges we must tackle if we are to equitably endure the coming upheavals of climate change and the crowded world that has caused it.”—Douglas W. Tallamy, author of Nature's Best Hope
