In February 1985, DEA agent Enrique Kiki Camarena was kidnapped outside the U.S. consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico. His body was found about a month later. Rafael Caro Quintero was convicted in Mexico and sentenced to 40 years, released in 2013 after a Mexican appeals court ruling, re-arrested in 2022 and extradited to the United States on February 27, 2025. He pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn. His trial is scheduled for March 8, 2027. This episode tells the case from the record, and what has not been decided.
Sources: ABC affiliate and KGNS reporting on the extradition, the Guadalajara Reporter, GV Wire, Ticklethewire, Mexican outlets El Universal, Infobae and El Imparcial on the 2026 hearings. Charges are allegations; no U.S. court has issued a verdict.
