On January 15, 1947, Elizabeth Ann Short was found murdered in a vacant lot on South Norton Avenue in Los Angeles. She was twenty-two years old. Her body had been mutilated and placed there after death elsewhere, according to the absence of blood at the discovery site described by the FBI.

Within hours, investigators had achieved one remarkable breakthrough. Blurred fingerprints were transmitted from Los Angeles through a newspaper Soundphoto system to the FBI, which identified the victim as Elizabeth Short in fifty-six minutes. Yet that success exposed the central problem: police knew who she was, but could not establish who had killed her, where the killing occurred, or how her body reached Norton Avenue.

The documented trail narrows sharply after January 9, when traveling salesman Robert “Red” Manley later said he left Short at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Her movements during the following days remain unverified in the available record. An envelope containing her personal papers later reached authorities. A postcard signed “Black Dahlia Avenger” appeared in the press. Neither item has been tied to an authenticated sender.

The Los Angeles Police Department led the homicide investigation, with FBI support for identification, records checks, and interviews. Later theories named doctors, acquaintances, and other suspects, but none produced a charge or an official solution. The case remains unresolved because the surviving public record identifies Elizabeth Short, but not the person who encountered her after the Biltmore, killed her elsewhere, and left her on Norton Avenue.
