Imagine a single small cactus—no taller than your hand—traveling hundreds of miles, crossing borders and boundaries, carrying with it a vision that would shape the spiritual life of thousands. The story of the Native American Church begins not with a single prophet, but with a living plant and a landscape marked by upheaval. In the late nineteenth century, Indigenous peoples across North America faced dispossession, forced assimilation, and the relentless advance of Euro-American law. Yet in the midst of this, a new kind of religious movement emerged. Its heart was the peyote cactus, known scientifically as Lophophora williamsii. This plant was not new to the land; it had already been revered by the Huichol, the Tepehuán, and other groups of northern Mexico for generations. Ethnographers documented its ceremonial use among the Huichol in Nayarit and Jalisco decades before American settlers arrived. The origins of the Native American Church are rooted in these deep traditions, but its flowering as an institution came through crisis and adaptation on the Southern Plains.Aurelius and Malik take on this case in full — 5 chapters, 35 minutes, one complete story.Learn more at: https://thecreedarchive.com/creed/native-american-church

The Creed Archive Dialogues is part of The Archive Network by Jonkai Ventures. In every episode, curators Aurelius and Malik take one religious tradition and follow it from origin to living practice — one setting out the belief on its own terms, the other pressing on the harder ground.
