Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF) is an indie survival horror video game franchise created by solo developer Scott Cawthon. The concept famously emerged after Cawthon received negative feedback on a family-friendly title, Chipper & Sons Lumber Co., where players noted that the animal characters inadvertently looked like terrifying animatronics. Rather than abandoning game development, Cawthon leaned into the uncanny visual style. Using Clickteam Fusion 2.5 and Autodesk 3ds Max, he independently programmed the original 2014 game over several months, voicing the iconic "Phone Guy" character himself and relying heavily on resource-management tension and environmental storytelling over traditional exposition. The franchise quickly evolved into a global multimedia phenomenon, expanding into numerous video game sequels, spinoffs, and community-supported fan games under Cawthon’s Fazbear Fanverse Initiative. In 2023, Blumhouse Productions adapted the title into a feature film directed by Emma Tammi, which combined digital thrills with physical animatronics engineered by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
