Witney W. Schneidman

Witney Schneidman’s lifelong interest in Africa was sparked in 1971 when, during a gap year after high school, he was in Uganda as Idi Amin took over the country.

During his sweeping career, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in the Clinton Administration where he worked on the peace process in Angola, South Africa’s transition to democracy and the passage and implementation of the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

Dr. Schneidman also established and chaired the Africa Practice at Covington & Burling LLP, as a non-lawyer, where he advised leading companies on the continent in various sectors—including technology, banking, telecommunications, Life Sciences, infrastructure, and energy—across more than 30 African countries.

Dr. Schneidman is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute, a Board member of the Corporate Council on Africa, and an Advisory Board member of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art. He is CEO of his own Africa-focused consulting practice and the author of "Engaging Africa: Washington and the Fall of Portugal’s Colonial Empire."
