Teresa Edgerton insists that she has been telling stories since she first learned to talk. Sixty years later, she is still inventing them. This may be one of them. Self-taught and largely self-educated, it took her almost ten years to finish, sell, and see her first novel published. Ignorance may not be bliss, she says, but it can be a great encouragement in situations where someone wiser and better-informed might have walked away. That first novel, Child of Saturn, was a finalist for the Compton-Crook award. Having (temporarily) slaked her thirst for epic fantasy by writing one trilogy, she went on to write the proto-steampunk, proto-fantasy-of-manners, Goblin Moon. It enjoyed a modest success at the time, and gained an enthusiastic following over the next two decades — to the benefit of the used-book sellers if not of the author. On paper, her life looks more glamorous than it ever really was. Puppetmaking, tarot reading, crystal gazing ... when all these things were done for the day, there were still the dishes and a houseful of children. The children were the best part, of course, but writing was definitely the next best. And now the state of the economy has given her the chance to relive those days again — crowded, noisy, with doorjambs sticky and peanut butter to be discovered in unexpected places, but still with the children the best part — as she and her husband have welcomed back home a grown son, two daughters, a son-in-law, and five-year-old twin grandsons. Somehow, with one bathroom, barely enough bedrooms to go around, and enough books to build a stupendous fort as soon as one of the little boys happens to think of it, they all manage to live in relative harmony And for the crucial question, “Do they have pets? How can she be a fantasy writer and not have pets?” The Edgertons support a large flock of dogs.
