Jimmy O'Neill

Jimmy O’Neill is arguably the most controversial comedic figure to hail from Wigan since music-hall wild man Frank Randle.

In The Wigan Joker: Confessions of a Celebrity Jobseeker – Book 1, he recounts growing up in a dysfunctional, working-class home under Thatcher’s Britain, and the hopelessness facing those born in the era of Gen X.

Described by Times journalist and biographer Jonathan Margolis as “rough, raw, imperfect, incredibly poignant and frequently very, very funny”, his memoir moves from a shy, troubled youth navigating dead-end jobs under the grey skies of the eighties, to the colourful, controversial figure he would become.

At times heartbreaking, at times savage, it’s a complete insight into the life of the man who, through many incarnations – aspiring bodybuilder, petty conman, budding rockstar – became ‘The Wigan Joker’, the infamous Wigan comedian.
