Erin Derham Van Swol

Erin Derham Van Swol is a documentary filmmaker, historian, and author based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Her documentary “Stuffed” premiered at SXSW, was covered by The New York Times, and streams on Amazon. She directed “Point of View” for Joanna Gaines's Magnolia Network and has developed series for Amazon and Discovery+.

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene tore through her mountains. She and her husband, journalist Matt Van Swol, picked up cameras and spent months documenting what happened to their neighbors. What she filmed did not match what the national media reported, and the year that followed took apart nearly everything she believed.

Confessions of a Liberal is her first book. It is an account of losing an ideology she had held for twenty years, the friendships that ended, and the faith that arrived through three church invitations and a horse that had no business trotting past her garden fence.

She has spent her career finding the humanity in misunderstood subjects. She did not expect to become one.
