I was excited to find this book. I am a mom of three, and I live overseas, and I know that I'm in the burnout arena. The problem I had with the book is that every time there was a quiz my answers weren't ever in one category, and she only covers 3 categories, so if you don't fit in one box, best of luck you're on your own! I couldn't relate to the stories she shared. If you are able to hire a babysitter GET ONE! If you can order take out , DO IT! If you have a semi nice gym in your town, GO! If you have any relationships with any respectable women, GRAB THEM! I DON'T HAVE ANY OF THESE THINGS!
Don't wanna have sex but love your husband, GIVE HIM SOME! Maybe he'll be more sympathetic to your emotional needs because you care about his!
I was frustrated that most of the mom's that she talks to doesn't seem to have tried anything... I am not one to repeat the same mistakes and my philosophy in life is to keep moving forward... I've literally tried everything but living overseas with the constant stress, cultural stress, isolation etc. this book just didn't have any answers for me... so I was disappointed. Tribute to Moms out there, you are in the battlefield.
sincerly your friend if we lived in the same city, Laura

If you have little people running or crawling around your house you are at risk of burnout or may even be in the midst of burnout right now. Do yourself a gigantic favor and read this book. It is written by Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, a Doctor of Psychology and Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. I'll share my top 5 takeaways on this wonderful book below.
1. Mommy Burnout has 10 terrific and relevant chapters. Read through the book's table of contents on Amazon's "Look Inside" and I have a hunch a few of these chapters and subtitles will strike a chord with you. If so, read those chapters first. This book is structured such that you can skip around to the chapters you most need to read right away. That said, I encourage you to still read the entire book, as you will gain some important insights now for a future potentially challenging parenting season.
2. Each chapter balances real-life stories with practical advice. Sheryl does a great job of sharing relevant stories of Moms navigating parenting challenges, based on the chapter titles. These stories bring great humanity to this book, along with an opportunity for an emotional connection to the chapter's subject. Wonderfully, Sheryl doesn't stop with stories. She brings in several action items for you to consider in each chapter. I found her advice to be immensely practical and applicable.
3. Dads, Grandparents, and friends of Moms should read this book too. While this book is clearly written for Moms, I think that Dads should read this book because so much of it is relevant to us as parents too. I also think it is important for Moms and Dads to be aligned on parenting strategies. And many Dads are in the primary parenting role while many Moms are in the primary breadwinner role, so "Daddy Burnout" is possible too. Additionally, I do think Grandparents and friends of Moms should read this book because you all can be so helpful in reducing parenting stress and preventing burnout. Basically, if you're an adult, read this book. :)
4. Sheryl invested 7 years of her time in writing this book, and it shows. In the introduction chapter Sheryl shares how this book ultimately took her 7 years to write. This was because she was working as a therapist and raising three kids with her husband. I do think this book is all the better because it was created over time and not cranked out quickly. Sheryl's experience in therapy and as a Mom over time helped craft this into a great book.
5. This book is incredibly affordable therapy. Sheryl makes a great point in her concluding chapter that therapy or medicine may be needed for some parents in the midst of burnout, but community is needed for all parents. I agree that we are stronger together. That said, I think you could spend hundreds of dollars in therapy getting the wisdom that is imparted in this book. (Please note that I do encourage you to get therapy if it is needed. No book can help you navigate the nuances of your specific situation. A therapist can.) Bottom line: this book is worth the investment of your money to buy it and your time to read it.

For myself, the idea of motherhood was accompanied by images of children laughing wholesomely in a park while mothers lovingly watched over them. And then... Not much had been written on the subject of the difficulties of being a mother at the time, my time. Both my mother and mother-in-law would tell me, when I would complain of being tired, to suck it up...as they had. Mommy Burnout is therefore seen by this reader as a relevant tool for all mothers second guessing their role and effectiveness as a parent and a human (!). It will reassure the insecure, it will console the broken hearted, it will guide the momentarily lost, it will normalize the challenges. The stories shared and the tips offered are full of insights that have the potential to reframe, reshape and renew one's relationship to motherhood and oneself. And avoid a burnout...

Dr. Sheryl's book, Mommy Burnout, is a must-read for all the mothers I know of this day and age - especially now with the COVID pandemic in full force. This book is relevant for a cross-section of so many mothers I know: educated, ambitious, working mothers; mothers who were raised to believe we can do anything; mothers who have sacrificed our mental health, our professional careers or friendship circles; mothers who are stressed to the max, physically and emotionally taxed out from being COOs of busy households; mothers who are now also serving as camp counselors and home school teachers under the pandemic,
This book is essential reading material we all need to keep out mental health in check. The book offers practical advise for developing healthy lifestyle choices, regaining some privacy, independence, and sanity. Any and all mothers should read this book to learn how focus on end-goal ideas that matter most, such as the legacy we want to teach our kids. The book is full of medical research and citations -- and prescription plans and check lists for how to get life back in balance.
Filled with practical advice, such as spirituality strengthening tips, debunking the super mom myth, and straddling the expectations of a working mother, this books takes motherhood mental-health to the next level.
I am personally a victim of so many of the symptoms Dr Ziegler describes -- from acute stress and shallow breathing to walking on eggshells, and this book helped me diagnose just how close I was to going over the edge. No vacation could have fixed my emotional exhaustion -- but a good book like this did. Thank you, Dr Sheryl, for helping me realize the limits and boundaries I needed to create to become my own best friend again.

Momming ain't easy! I have 6 kids in stairsteps 2 years apart. We also homeschool, so between that and being pregnant or nusing for the past 12 years I got totally wrapped up in mothering. Between this book and a homeschooling book "Teaching from Rest" by Sarah Mackenzie (which is a good read even if you don't homeschool!) I have finally gotten it though my thick head that I have to take some me time and spend time with friends. It sounds so simple, but moms every where just keep trying to pour themselves out even though there is never anything put back into the pitcher.
Please stressed out momma read this book and make a date to do something fun and relaxing with a friend. You need it, it is not a luxury!
