Yay! Always fun to have new Leta Blake to read! And her newest M/M romance Smoky Mountain Dreams has more angst than you can shake a stick at, just as we have come to expect from Ms. Blake.

Spoilers abound in this one, so I will be purposely vague. Failed making-it-to-the-big-time country crooner Christopher Ryder meets and starts a relationship with failed-being-a-gay-man Jesse Birch, who owns and operates his own jewelry design studio. There are so many things in the path to their happily-ever-after that it is almost comical. I mean, poor guys! You really will root for these boys from the word, "Go."

Give yourself some time, because this is a longer book coming in at just over 400 pages. Don't start it and then have a test coming up or a paper due! You'll hate yourself because this is hard to put down.

This is a great book folks! It ends in the holiday season and is chalk full of warm 'n fuzzy holiday cheer. I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND Smoky Mountain Dreams to read by your Christmas tree.

OMG, I forgot to mention the sex! *head/desk* Where is my brain? These two were outstanding in the sex department. And after reading this, you'll never look at your or your mother's or grandmother's or anyone's string of pearls the same again. *clears throat*

Sex. Lots of sex. Lots and lots of sex. First of all, I don’t like explicate sex in my gay novels; I think it is a cop-out by the author. In fact, I don’t even read it. I’m gay, but when I come to explicate sex scenes in gay novels, I skim over them. I think I skimmed over almost a third of this novel.

If I want sex scenes, I will search out something labeled ‘erotic fiction’ or ‘pornography’. I’ll admit, it’s not just this author, but many authors are writing straightforward gay fiction which should be labeled ‘erotic’, and I think they are being deceitful by not doing so.

I also fault the reviewers who do not mention that the story has an overabundance of explicate sex.

The two protagonists are well developed and generally likeable and the story is interesting, but I wonder why Christopher is so insecure since he is an entertainer and performs on stage all the time.

If you like plenty of sex in your stories, you will like this story.

************Spoilers, you are warned**************

Normally I review after I've had a few days or so to contemplate a deep, emotional book such as this. I read it because I enjoyed another book by the same author, but this one was much deeper and darker than the other. This was one of those books that kept me from sleeping when I should have, mainly because it hit close to home (family in a vegetative state, one of my favorite books in grammar school was also Jane Eyre, which has a similar situation).

I immediately liked Christopher. He was one of those characters who was so emotionally abused for years he didn't seem to see his own self-worth. In the beginning, when he met Jesse I knew that, as an HEA story, they'd end up together, but at times I kind of wished Christopher really did have someone other than this man with his own demons he could rely on because Christopher was so utterly alone. At one point I even wanted to change the story so a different person who would always put Christopher first came in and 'rescued' him.

Jesse is a man who seems to not 'see' that he is enabling this strong issue to persist. While I can completely understand his need to keep his wife, who is in a vegetative state away from this man he might have feelings for, at the same time it is one of those situations that should be brought up first and foremost, because he is still married. What stuck with me the most here is that even after finding out that the man he's been having relations with is still, by law, married, Christopher looked past that and stayed. I don't know many people who would have handled the news the way he learned as gracefully.

The books seems to come to a head, meaning the climax, is when Christopher meets the wife (only in part his own fault, because he could have said no and explained why it was a bad idea) without Jesse's knowledge, leading Jesse to walk in and jump to conclusions. Obviously we need some sort of dramatic scene because things can't be all wine and roses in these types of deep stories; they aren't the funny and simple stories of many. Still, with Christopher having told Jesse that he understands he'll always be second, and to have Jesse fly off as he did, I could see poor Christopher's heart shattering.

What makes me give this book a 4 instead of a 3 or 2 is because it deals with how much of a jerk Jesse was, and Christopher flat out told him that he didn't know if he would ever forgive Jesse for the things he said. I like to see a person stand up for himself. Many times I've seen deep issues like this in HEA stories that are glossed over, where they should not be, especially when there is pain. Maybe I read too much into stories. Throughout this story I didn't want to like Jesse because I knew where the plot was headed and I knew what was going to happen, but then I remember Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre, and how much I adored him as a child, so I was able to compare the two and find some sympathetic feelings for him. Ultimately, it is Christopher who stood out, and because he ended up happy, then I ended up happy.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a HEA with some deep undertones. I understand how the kids, and even Jesse felt with the mother/wife as a shell. More importantly, I could empathize with Christopher and I am sure others can, with trying to be invisible.
