The two stars are simply because: 1) the concept was intriguing, and 2) there are no glaring misspellings or grammatical mistakes. However, the story quickly becomes a hot mess with an unlikeable lead female character and the dumbest bunch of cowboys on the face of the earth. Don’t read any farther if you don’t want spoilers...
I am at 75% on my kindle and I had to stop to take a breather before my ocd kicks in and makes me finish it.
The story focuses on the kidnapped twins (boy/girl, 25 years ago), children 4 & 5 after 3 boys, and the wealthy ranching family’s search for them. A second storyline concerns one of the 3 sons’ past girlfriend who is now married to a deputy who abuses her. Very thin set up to why there had been a break up, marriage to the abuser and her justification for staying in the marriage.
The missing male twin has been “found”, and with thin evidence and a blind eye to any facts that don’t support the identity of this stranger, everyone welcomes him with open arms. Even the 3 older sons, with some suspicions, let the love fest proceed.
With money and resources at their disposal, every single one of these people behave like idiots - no one acts on their suspicions. No one calls in experts to investigate and verify. Frustrating and infuriating for the reader. And, by the way, the villains are so broadly drawn, they are caricatures...they need handlebar mustaches to twirl.
All in all, I’d avoid this one, although I’ll point out all the readers who liked it. Go with your gut.
