I got this one for free and looked forward to an enjoyable read, a romance intertwined with a historical twist. When I was at about 20% of the story I had to stop because I couldn't relate to anything, not the main characters, not the story. I kept waiting for it to grip me but it didn't so I stopped reading. Sorry but I found this one to be a waste of time. Good thing I didn't have to spend any money on it.

I love time travel stories and this one was very unique, going back to the revolutionary war. We find our protagonist, Emilie, who is a history buff and Zane, her jet setting ex-husband, tossed into the middle of the revolutionary war while riding in a hot air balloon. Kind of strange, but this is a paranormal story and Emilie already is semi dressed to that era due to a festival back in the 20th century. I thought that Emilie accepted her dilemma a little too quickly and Zane was just a snot nose playboy who only thought about himself. There is a very steamy sex scene between these two that went on for pages and pages, which I skipped over....it was overkill as far as I'm concerned. As the story progresses, we meet up with George Washington (briefly) and we see our two protagonists grow, Emilie in accepting Zane as he is and Zane finally starting to realize that he is not the center of everything. I look forward to reading the next chapter in their lives and see them grow more.
I read this book as a recommendation on a readers group forum. I was looking for a book I read in about 1998 or 1999 about a time travel romance. In the book I read, the woman fell through a wall or closet in the house & ended in colonial times where she falls in love and has to decide between two worlds. This wasn’t that book. This is a very quick and light read and I enjoyed it but I didn’t love it. First of all, I enjoy historicals for the history and much of that was fictional in this book. Secondly, I didn’t really like either hero. They both left much to be desired in my opinion. Third, the ending was unbelievable; and not in a wow way but in a yea whatever way. I don’t want to give anything up but this gets three stars because I did enjoy it but there wasn’t enough here to make it memorable for me.
This is undoubtedly one of the finest and most unusual Time Travel books I have ever read. Barbara Bretton kept the language and mores of the people living over two hundred years ago, and did it with ease. What makes it so unusual is that although it is a Time Travel book, it also combines the genres of Historical Fiction (the Revolutionary War),and Romance. Further, the author imbued the characters with such detail that her exquisitely penetrating studies allow the reader to become familiar with everyone quickly and with great ease. Inasmuch as the only time I have to read is before going to sleep, I found myself watching the clock, eagerly awaiting bedtime in order to get back to this splendid book.
Since I love American history, especially the Revolutionary era, and also enjoy time travel romances, I couldn't wait to read this book. I wish I could say I loved it, but I'll have to settle for liking it, because there were just too many flaws. The main problem I had is the way the heroine could accept being transported to the 18thc so easily, it's true she was an avid Revolutionary history fan, but that doesn't account for her calm acceptance of what to anyone else (like her ex-husband) would be an unbelievable ("Get me out of here!!") situation. She adjusted way too fast, one minute she's longing for indoor plumbing and a modern shower, the next she seems to have no problem with a metal tub and chamber pot. (no mention of whatever passed for toilet paper), She has a few self-centered moments of bewailing the lack of cosmetics, beauty salons and face creams, next minute...no problem with that! And as she plans what her new life will be in these olden days, she thinks of having a family, but doesn't even give a thought to what that might mean in a time when cemeteries were filled with children's graves and it was a rare couple who didn't experience the death of an infant or small child.
As for the relationshiop between Emilie and Zane....potential for a lot of fireworks, but way too few of those! In fact, there wasn't enough interaction between them to account for the HEA at the end. There was the hint of a romantic rivalry for her affections with Revolutionary spy Andrew McVie, but that quickly came to nothing. Their biggest problem was they wanted different things out of life, this kept them apart in their own time but a sudden trip backward 200 years and it's all resolved? I realize this is fiction, but come on!
The best part of this book was the references to the War, the plot against Washington, the glimpse into the life of a colonial family living their daily life...I found myself more interested in Rebecca, Charity and Isaac than I was in Zane and Emilie. If Ms. Bretton were to write a separate historical novel about them, I'd buy the book in a minute, and have no doubt I'd give it five stars!
I was excited to come across this book. I love time-travel romances, and Colonial America is a time period I'm interested in. The premise was good, but what kept me from loving the story was the lack of depth. The plot was a bit skimpy, and the characters could have used more development, especially Emilie. It takes her about five minutes to figure out that she is no longer in the present, but there is no disbelief, denial, panic, or fear. She just instantly accepts it. She doesn't seem to miss anything or anyone. There is no mention of parents, siblings, or friends. It's like she had no connections to anyone. The author keeps trying to convince the reader of this great love between her and Zane, but I honestly didn't feel it. Their interactions were awkward, and their conversations full of wise-cracks and sarcasm. It was an interesting story, but it could have been better if people and events were drawn in more detail.
