CHARMED: A SUGAR MAPLE SHORT STORY by Barbara Bretton is a paranormal (romance?), evidently (from liberal backstory) a continuation of previous book(s). Having not read the other books in this series, specifically one(s) that preceded it, I was quite lost as to the unique world the author had created wherein this short story takes place. The back story fills in a lot of holes (but not enough to stand alone), i.e., the point-of-view character, Chloe, is half-sorceress, half-human in a town in Vermont where EVERYONE is magick. Chloe is married to the "love of her life, Luke," who is 100% human. They're pregnant, and this is somehow (but I couldn't see how) a HUGE development. And when this secret is revealed, everything falls apart. The secret is revealed by a heretofore unknown magick person who was simply in town to attend one of Chloe's knitting conventions.
This short story runs 26 pages (minus front- and back-matter). It was well-written. Seemed charming and interesting. I might have to go find the previous books in Bretton's series so I can understand more of the story setting.
