This book is rubbish. And yes, I've read all 4. You might be wondering why? I love to read. My teenage daughter doesn't. And I am trying to encourage her to read more. I also read books that she does, so we can discuss them, as she is home schooled. When she expressed a desire to read a series of 4 books, you can imagine my joy! I promptly purchased all 4 books, and set abut reading them.
Please do not waste your time or your money. These books are poorly written. The characters are nasty, shallow and mean, with absolutely no redeeming qualities. The main character is self-centred and self-obsessed. Promisingly, she initially starts off as independent and strong, but quickly deteriorates into selfish and obnoxious. Looks are everything. She likes 2 boys; leads one on; but is upset if the lead-on is interested in anyone else. The story-line is like a 10 year olds version of Twilight - but probably worse. Bearing in mind that the story revolves around vampires, it is still the most unbelievable and ridiculous bit of twaddle I have ever read. Book 1 is barely passable - I would give it 1 star - just. Book 2 - 1/2 star, and books 3 and 4 are rubbish, and in sections don't even make sense.
Anyway, the big joke is on me: I had finished reading all 4 books, when my 14yo started the first. After about 20 pages, my daughter confessed that she found it a load of rubbish, was not going to read them, and laughed at me for reading them!!

I enjoyed it more than some and less than others, but can definitely say I'll read the next book, just don't know when. There were definitely some similarities to Twilight, but I wouldn't say this was a knock off. You can be the judge.

Julia is one of those girls with a set number of friends, isn't really popular, and never had a boyfriend. She'd lost her mom when she was a child and lives with her dad and brother. She is a typical teen who goes to school and works part-time. On her way home one evening, her car runs out of gas and she decides to take a shortcut home through the woods. Yeah, a bit of a cliche, right? However, Julia isn't exactly normal. Unlike most people, she is gifted with the ability to sense others emotions. Nearly home, she senses something evil and takes off running when she trips and nearly falls over a cliff. Enter Nicholas. He fights off whoever spooked her, saves her from falling to her death, and takes her home. Of course he happens to be gorgeous and she is instantly attracted to him. That is not so surprising when you think about it. What is though is how she feels when not in his presence. After he leaves her at her home, she feels bereft. An unnatural need to be around him. This is the part that kind of threw me. I get she was intrigued and attracted to him, but I didn't understand the strong pull...the insane connection that never really got explained. When he ignores her later, she is upset and decides to write him out of her life. An overreaction if ever there were one. He was barely in her life so kind of hard to relate to her feelings of disillusion and heart break. Then she meets Phil. A new transfer to her school who she is surprised to also find herself attracted to. When he is attacked and disappears, she will learn that those things that she thought only existed in movies are actually real, and have focused on her. And here is where things get a little dicey again. There is no real explanation for why Nicholas says they are attracted to her. What is so special about her?

There were definitely some cheesy moments, some moments when I rolled my eyes at how dramatic she could be...she was such a teenager. And insta-love is a bit far-fetched in this case. That doesn't mean that I did not enjoy the book, just that it had its good moments and its not so great moments. Overall, I can say that I did get into the story and wanted to see where it was going. I have a good idea, but just to be sure, I'll read the next book. With that said, if you are a fan of paranormal YA books, then you may enjoy this one, but I make no promises. As they say, "to each his own".

Book Review-The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos

Julia is in high school and has a special ability. She can feel the emotions of the people around her. She knows who is being truthful, scared, happy and even angry. She is constantly bombarded by emotions. No one knows she has the ability, not even her father or brother. After her mother’s disappearance she is afraid to worry her father more.
One night while coming home from work, her car runs out of gas and she is forced to abandon it. She decides to take a short cut through the woods. All of a sudden she feels something stalking her. She runs and trips over the edge of a cliff. She is hanging by a branch calling for help. She still feels the hungry feelings of whatever is stalking her. Finally the voice of a boy calls down to her and then she hears the sounds of a fight above her. When she can’t hold on any longer, she falls. However, she is surprised to be caught by the owner of the mysterious voice, Nicholas. He carries her home.
Julia’s life changes after that. She is thrust into a world of evil that she naively thought didn’t exist. She learns of her mother’s fate and what her role is to be in the coming conflicts.
The idea of this book and the plot that evolved were right up my alley. I loved the mystery, the vampires and the role Julia plays. However, I don’t like Julia’s character. She came off across as spoiled and stubborn at times. Then at other times gave up too easily. I had a hard time believing her. I think I would have liked the book better if I liked the main character more. I really want to see where the author takes the story and I hope she makes Julia more mature as the story continues. I give it a 3 out of 5.

The only reason I finished this book was so I could write this review. This is not only a retread of the overdone and long dead vampire theme, but it is undoubtedly the worst young adult book I've ever read. The characters are entirely lifeless and predictable, the plot is non-existent, and the language is simply dull. Cliches, lack of description, and just plain weak grammar combine for an eyelid-drooping experience that made me want to clean a bathroom or weed the garden rather than turn the page. If you're suffering from insomnia, check this book out. But If you want a good read, keep looking!
