5,0 von 5 SternenThe Best Account of Flying C-130s in the Vietnam Conflict

This is without doubt the best account of flying C-130s in the Vietnam conflict that has yet appeared. Although Messex initially seems to be the typical egocentric Air Force pilot, the many authentic combat episodes he describes (and he describes them very well) justify his version of the world of combat airlift as he experienced it.

Curt Messix wrote a fantastic story of the little known and often ridiculed "trash haulers" of the USAF. For me the story hit right at home, as I was stationed in Okinawa and Vietnam during much of the time period of the story as a member of the 1st SFG. His unit supported our airborne operations as well as the SF camps in VN. My hat is off to him and the members of the unsung heros of the C-130 crewmembers who supported the war effort throughout SE Asia. Hats off and a big salute to Curt for writing this book.
I was heading out and needed an audio book for the road so swung by the library and stumbled accross this book. I love aviation books but did wonder about just how much I would enjoy a book about a transport pilot. I mean really, don't they just fly stuff from here to there? I have never been more pleasantly surprised. This was one of the best books about not only flying but flying in SE Asia I have ever read. I have recommended it to several people and they all finished it with the same thoughts I did. I will never take what anyone does in the military for granted again, all play a critical role and I thank them for that.
As a side note I have had the fortune of meeting the author's wife and she has shared with me several articles Curt wrote for various magazines over the years.
Curt Messex also wrote Combat Pay which takes place prior to the big build up in Vietnam and is every bit as good. You won't be sorry.
