After a rather mediocre introduction to the series with Eye of the Storm, the second book in the Wheel of Time series, The Great Hunt, makes significant improvements over the first book.
The story picks up from where Eye of the Storm left and it continues in a rather good pace with an interesting story line and far more character development for almost all the characters in the book. The writer clearly changed his focus from Rand almost exclusively in the first book, to a mix of Rand, who is the protagonist after all, and the other characters including Egwene, Nynaeve, Loial, Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, and Thom Merillin among others. Moreover, new and interesting characters are introduced but I'll be providing no spoilers!
Compared to Eye of the Storm, the writing has improved with fewer plot holes, more fluid prose and more structured and focused chapters. However, the book reaches a screeching halt half way through the book, the focus of chapters becomes muddled and the writing suffers. The plot does not pick up until the last hundred pages in a similar fashion to Eye of the Storm with a similar climax.
This book will most definitely strengthen your interest in the series and your want to continue reading the story of this massive saga.
