It is a classic, no doubt, and beautifully written. The vision is (for most of the novel) very dark as regards the moral depravity of the leading characters. The ending is somewhat redemptive, however.

The cover was blurry , the pages were not numbered, and there were no numbered chapters. It was very difficult to read. It was very tiny print of page after page There was nothing about it that resembled a normal book. I would not recommend buying that book, and I regret that I did.

There's no need to review or comment on Cousin Bette, one of the greatest novels ever written. What I want to say here is that there are several different English translations of uneven quality. In university, I used the Penguin Classic. The text was completely transparent and my mind was immediately immersed in the story. Recently I saw a bargain hardback version and without thinking I bought it since my paperback was giving way. But when I started reading, I found my mind stumbling over clumsy English expressions. I lost concentration and was focusing more on the words than the story. It was then that I realised I have completely overlooked the fact that this was a different translation.
People like me who knows only one language well, are faced with a problem when we want to read the great books written in another language. Which translation is good and which is clumsy, or worse, inaccurate?
