What can I write? I know, Seth is the man, the guru. But this book, did it really require writing? There are a couple of nuggets sprinkled in here, I liked the positioning graph (simple, yet powerful), the reminders, "People like us do things like this!" and "What change do I seek to make?" What turned me off, though, was the rambling, staccato style, only main clauses...drove me nuts. It may work in a podcast but not in a book!
It's also about the courage it takes to stand out with a new idea It's also about creating great work It's also about creating lasting impact It's also about enchanting your customers with your unique product or service And it's definitively about how you can overcome all the obstacles in the way
This book notwithstanding, Marketing was originally devised to manage overcapacity of industrial production by encouraging consumer demand. An example is the bacon and eggs breakfast, successfully marketed by the American food industry to American consumers as the "breakfast staple".
Mr. Godin's book is a case in point, framing marketing as "helping others become who they seek to become" (p13) and as a "generous act of helping others" (p11) which offers "opportunities for humans to solve their problems" (p13). He is marketing an approach to marketing.
Nonetheless, Godin is no doubt an expert and offers structured and systemized methods to sustaining interest in today's world of digital hype, scams, and pressure. Certainly useful and applicable to any campaign, idea or product seeking to make an impact. As such, and as others have stated before, the book offers some helpful nuggets of insight, just don't fall for all the marketing.
