Inhaltsangabe

Based on Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal's wildly popular course The Science of Willpower, The Willpower Instinct is the first book to explain the new science of self-control and how it can be harnessed to improve our health, happiness, and productivity. Informed by the latest research and combining cutting-edge insights from psychology, economics, neuroscience, and medicine, The Willpower Instinct explains exactly what willpower is, how it works, and why it matters. For example, listeners will learn:

  • Willpower is a mind-body response, not a virtue. It is a biological function that can be improved through mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
  • Willpower is not an unlimited resource. Too much self-control can actually be bad for your health.
  • Temptation and stress hijack the brain's systems of self-control, but the brain can be trained for greater willpower.
  • Guilt and shame over your setbacks lead to giving in again, but self-forgiveness and self-compassion boost self-control.
  • Giving up control is sometimes the only way to gain self-control.
  • Willpower failures are contagious - you can catch the desire to overspend or overeat from your friends - but you can also catch self-control from the right role models.

In the groundbreaking tradition of Getting Things Done, The Willpower Instinct combines life-changing prescriptive advice and complementary exercises to help listeners with goals ranging from losing weight to more patient parenting, less procrastination, better health, and greater productivity at work.

Kritikerstimmen

"This book has tremendous value for anyone interested in learning how to achieve their goals more effectively. McGonigal clearly breaks down a large body of relevant scientific research and its applications, and shows that awareness of the limits of willpower is crucial to our ability to exercise true self control." (Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., co-author of You Are Not Your Brain and author of best-selling Brain Lock)

    "Underappreciated"

The book is underappreciated, because what it teaches is so obvious, but then it is not. Many would agree that time and money are fairly valuable resources. But what about having time and money and little to no willpower? May it be that willpower and knowing how to use it - consciously or unconsciously - is critical to health, success and happiness?

This book will teach you that willpower is a depletable resource, which works similar to a muscle. It's strength - aside from genetic predispositions - is influenced by a myriad of factors you have more or less control over. For instance anything that effects your heart rate variability (HRV) or blood sugar level has implications for your willpower. That would include the food you eat, the thoughts you carry, the people you associate with and the way you exercise.

If you think willpower is a critical resource that may help you achieve your goals, this book will be a good investment. As you may have already noticed the book's concept is very much complementary to building good habits. If you are already well-read in the latter you may appreciate this book even more.

It's a short read by the way. It can comfortably be listened to at 2x.

    "very useful"

I like the book cause it was very useful. you learn a lot about our own behaviour and how to reach the goals you always wanted to reach. but it is not a quick fix...apply the lessons and after a couple of month you will see enorm results

    "characterless meaningless,featureless,empty,boring"

Strongly influenced by female drivel, blabla, gook or as germans simply would say: "GeLABER". Absolutely unfocused garbage. The author never draws a conclusion and just talks endlessly, without making a point. I always had the feeling like i was sitting in a cafe with some dumb female teaching degree students that I liked to ... and that `s only because I had the patience to hang around and try to listen to `em.

The final conclusion In the final chapter is a symbol of the lack of substance: draw your own conclusion. "Of what" ?? the user must ask.

With all due respect ... if this audible were a book it would be less worth than toilet tissue.

    DO NOT BUY!! (and/or listen!!)

P.S. you don t have to have WILL POWER to listen to this book but u definitely have to be a masochist. which I ain t . After the first half I fast-forwarded to the end! Couldn t take it anymoe.
