Inhaltsangabe

In a far future, post-nuclear-holocaust Africa, genocide plagues one region. The aggressors, the Nuru, have decided to follow the Great Book and exterminate the Okeke. But when the only surviving member of a slain Okeke village is brutally raped, she manages to escape, wandering farther into the desert.

She gives birth to a baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand and instinctively knows that her daughter is different. She names her daughter Onyesonwu, which means "Who Fears Death?" in an ancient African tongue.

Reared under the tutelage of a mysterious and traditional shaman, Onyesonwu discovers her magical destiny - to end the genocide of her people. The journey to fulfill her destiny will force her to grapple with nature, tradition, history, true love, the spiritual mysteries of her culture - and eventually death itself.

Kritikerstimmen

"Okorafor examines a host of evils in her chillingly realistic tale-gender and racial inequality share top billing, along with female genital mutilation and complacency in the face of destructive tradition-and winds these disparate concepts together into a fantastical, magical blend of grand storytelling." I love a good story, even more so, if it is artfully told.

    "An African Odyssey"

This is a mesmerizing and haunting novel, deeply moving but with an abrasive touch.

Anne Flosnik does an incredible job in reading it. Her lovely African English gives so much authenticity to the narrative, the emotions sound so real, that I felt hypnotized and touched by the sound of it. I felt moved back to Africa, a continent I am deeply in love with.

Nnedi Okorafor placed this story into a post apocalyptic Africa, where remnants of high-tech like computers and mobile phones are still in use, but not understood anymore, they simply became relics of a bygone time. Genocide and slavery are prevalent and the ruling class, the Nuru, try to wipe out the Obeke, because it is written in the prophesy of the great book that this will bring back the golden times.

Onyesonwu, the daughter of an Obeke woman raped by a Nuru man, grows up in the East amidst Obeke people and suffers under the hatred and despise, everybody shows towards an Ewu, a child of rape. Very soon she finds out that she is different, she has magical powers. She decides to set out on an epic journey to free her people and to rewrite the great book to bring peace to the world.

The story is full of magic and deeply embedded into African customs and folklore. I had a problem with the futuristic setting of the story, because genocide, cruelty and savagery are so wide spread in contemporary Africa, especially in Sudan, where the narrative took place that I do not understand, what value a post nuclear war scenario would add.

Regardless of that, one of the best books I read lately.
