Inhaltsangabe
They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning.
He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces, and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

Audio: aac, 22050 Hz, stereo, 62 kb/s - Normal wäre: 44100 Hz, stereo, 125 kb/s

Well written, but utterly lacking surprise.
Würden Sie dieses Buch einem Freund empfehlen? Warum oder warum nicht?
I have listened to the first five hours and so far, despite my best intentions, couldn't recommend it to anyone.
As far as the craftsmanship is concerned (as a non native speaker) I am impressed! The dialogues are juicy and funny and brilliantly read by the actor. But there is a fatal flaw: from a story about thieves you expect surprises. You want to marvel at their ingenuity and mutter to yourself "damn, didn't see that coming!". In the first 5 hours there is just one scene which accomplishes that (midnighters, I don't want to spoil), but it is explained and thus destroyed immediately afterwards. From a fantasy novel, on the other hand you expect to become curious about aspects of the world and to have them explained slowly, in a well timed manner. Total failure here. From a dramatic novel you expect dilemma and personal growth. Not present. Whatever this is supposed to be, I am only listening for the dialogue and the brilliant actor and will probably have to give it back before reaching fifty percent.

Super fantasy Reihe
Daumen hoch! Wirklich sehr zu empfehlen.

A great new fantasy anti hero
A gripping tale of secrets and lies and double crossing, featuring an unlikely hero too clever for his own good. None of the standard "Wizard shows up at a remote village and recruits a band of nobodies in search of the holy grail". The story moves cleverly back and forth between the present, a gripping and bloody plot of thievery, political intrigue and crime tale, and the past, where we learn who Locke Lamora and his friends and mentors are.
The two tales are moved along at a brisk pace, eloquently worded, most of the time told tongue-in-cheek and only occasionally resorting to extremely bloody and violent language.
Michael Page uses a variety and accents and speech inflections to bring a host of characters ti life, making it very easy to follow the dialogue scenes.
All in all one of the best books I've read in recent years. The only downside is that I don't think there will be a sequel. But then again, with Locke Lamora you can never be sure.

The Mob in Historical Attire
It is hard to stick a genre label on this book. Some aspects remind you of a Victorian novel, describing the decrepit poverty and misery of the lower class, but there is also a little bit of magic and witchcraft and of course, it is quite a colorful crime story as well.
The prose is nice and more than adequate, it would be befitting to a historical novel and often enough, it sounds like one. Michel Page does a great job in reading it and you don’t get tired listening to him, after all it is quite a long story. Unfortunately the dialogues are quite lengthy sometimes, without really adding anything of value and this is also true for parts of the story, where the author just keeps rambling on.
The narrative describes the life of Locke Lamore, who made it from an orphaned street urchin to the leader of the Gentleman Bastards, a gang of master thieves. He is a con artist and thief par excellence and a killer at times, but regardless of that, he has principles and personal ethics. He is loyal to his friends, but has little compassion with the rich and noble. His criminal career takes him through several steps, but leads to a final confrontation with the grey king, who intends to destroy most of Camorr to take revenge for the injustice done to his family decades ago.
There is quite a measure of blood and guts in the story and sometimes the cruelty is in deep contrast to the general light hearted tone of the narrative. The plot is not always convincing and the magic and wizardry, which changes the course of events now and then, does not really go to well with the otherwise quite mundane setup.
In summary, it is a nice story, entertaining enough, but less might have been more.

Wonderful coming of age Antihero story
I have listened to the lies of Locke Lamora several times now, and every time is a blast. The story is beautifully written with flashbacks from the childhood of the protagonists, that help explain their quirks and character. It also has the tension that keeps you listening even if other tasks would have priority.
