Inhaltsangabe

First published fifty years ago, The Andromeda Strain redefined the science fiction genre, and immediately established Michael Crichton as one of the brightest voices in contemporary literature worldwide.

"I love anything Michael Crichton writes." (Stephen King)

A military space probe, sent to collect extraterrestrial organisms from the upper atmosphere, is knocked out of orbit and falls to Earth. Twelve miles from the crash site, an inexplicable and deadly phenomenon terrorizes the residents of a sleepy desert town in Arizona, leaving only two survivors: an elderly addict and a newborn infant.

The United States government is forced to mobilize Project Wildfire, a top-secret emergency response protocol. Four of the nation’s most elite biophysicists are summoned to a clandestine underground laboratory located five stories beneath the desert and fitted with an automated atomic self-destruction mechanism for cases of irremediable contamination. Under conditions of total news blackout and the utmost urgency, the scientists race to understand and contain the crisis. But the Andromeda Strain proves different from anything they’ve ever seen - and what they don’t know could not only hurt them, but lead to unprecedented worldwide catastrophe.

Exciting premise and conclusion

Sometimes a bit too much on the technical language. Some dialogues tend to be lengthy. The story itself is stellar and is ended well.

Aged badly

I imagine this book was quite a hit when it first came out, but it aged absolutely terribly. Especially as an audiobook, I do not recommend it. There is soooo much boring technical description of WOW! machines that can do things automatically, which are just common routine to us now. There's also a metric ton of document reading, headers, numbers, codes, addresses, and so much other useless detail. Sometimes it even pulls you out of an actually good scene, when an important meeting is supposed to get us up to speed, suddenly we are read a communicee that is literally 50% irrelevant information before the interesting part begins. I'm sorry I don't care what the processing speed of your terminal is and how many requests it could handle in parallel while the one thing I'm interested in gets agonizingly left behind in an audiobook with only 8 hours runtime!

There's also zero character development, no chemistry between the protagonists, no interesting conflicts, only the omniscient narrator pushes things forward when he immediately contradicts anything the protagonists say, just to create some tension. "He though things were great... but they were not!", "He though it was over, he couldn't know how wrong he was". One member of the team isn't even in the book, why even bother describing him and his role in such detail in the beginning?

One really saddens a bit at the thought of what this could have been, if the artificial drama of the
"directive 7-12" had been omited from the book. There could've been more character engagement, more narrative of them alone in the bunker, more mishaps, a redemption arc for the one who kept a secret from the others, more failed experiments, SO MUCH MORE. The setup is so juicy, to lock them in such a facility, in living arrangements that today fill TV shows at Prime Time. But there's nothing, 7-12 looms over everything and hastens the story, because the stakes are so high. Yes it is a thriller, there needs to be a thrilling drama, and it is quite suspenseful but... yeah...

--------- LIGHT SPOILERS FROM HERE ON -----------

The biggest bore of the book is that it's clear how the book will end from minute 10, but of course, that also might have to do with the age of the book and because we're now used to such endings. One wonders why the scientists didn't think to just... prevent the obvious ending when they f0und out it would only do harm in the middle of the book. This paired with the conveniently missing substations, I mean, it just made my eyes roll

Amazing hard science-fiction

A great novel by Crichton. I imagine that, for many listeners (or readers), this book is too slow-moving, too technical and has boring characters. But those are things I love about The Andromeda Strain.
It's a tremendously realistic look at what might actually happen if humans were to encounter extra-terrestrial life. No tragic characters, no unprofessional conflicts out of nowhere. Just scientists in a lab, trying to find out what's going on by using normal scientific methods.

The narrator is very good, but sometimes it feels like half the characters are just the same grumpy old man.

All in all, highly recommend for people who like realistic science-fiction.

dry

I've only read Congo, Sphere and Jurassic park, those were incredible. comparably, this lacks suspense.
