Inhaltsangabe

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft.

Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence. It will kindle their wildest dreams...and fan their darkest fears. For no one knows who the Ramans are or why they have come. And now the moment of rendezvous awaits - just behind a Raman airlock door.

BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction by Hugo Award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer, who explains why Rendezvous with Rama will make the listener "feel both humbled and exhilarated at the same time".

Text to Speech reads ...

The monotonous and awkward pronunciation leaves only one conclusion: This audiobook was read bye a text to speech programm. Story was kind of lame, too. Didn't finish.

Breathtaking Adventure

Narrator reads in a very monotonous voice except when reading something a character says. Sounds weird at first but you get used to it. Apart from that, the story is just marvelous. Every bit is adding more to the mystery and you're just sitting there painting pictures in your head (or on paper) of what that world the author describes could look like. In my head i adapted the story to the Studio Ghibli art style and it was just so wonderful! I've heard bad things about the sequels (the story ends with a somewhat of a cliffhanger/satisfying ending) since they were written by someone else later on, but this book was just so interesting that I need to hear the rest (which is geo-locked on Audible thx for nothing) before the Denis Villeneuve movie adaptation releases in a couple of years from now. His movie adaptation of DUNE 1 was so incredible, I'm beyond excited for Rama. This is one of my all time favourites now

UPDATE:
I'm not reading/listening to the sequels by Gentry Lee. This book works best as a standalone with a cliffhanger. The sequels resets everything Rendezvous With Rama sets up and brings more Ramas into the story and suddenly mankind is the center of the universe and Ramans aren't as amazing anymore.

Doesn't age so well, bad narrator

Narrator: Sounds like a robot from a cheap 80s scifi movie.
Story: high expectations for 3 times scifi award winner on Hugo, Nebula, and Locus were not met. It unfortunately follows the typical stereotype of scifi novels were 'aliens' are in too many aspects similar to us. Consider life forms from a different world would have less in common with humans, than humans have with a banana.

Only recommended when you want to have a good overview of scifi bestsellers.

no frills first contact story

Hard scifi goodness. Doesn't feel dated despite written in the 70s. Maybe the polygamy.

I liked the narrator, he gave the captain a fun australian accent.

Classic scifi being classic

A classic science fiction book and one of the better ones at that.
An identified object appears rushing in the solar system with its orbit approximation showing a quick flyby and then moving on, humans scrambling to send a mission to it for exploration in any way possible and finding out it is some kind of gigantic empty alien spaceship/ecosystem... Sign me in!
The whole premise and mystery of Rendezvous with Rama are undoubtedly great and the book is really to the point. The science and physics are presented in a cold but simple way, giving just enough information and explanation for the reader to grasp the concept but never tiring them with extras.
Characters are not the focus but more a medium to move the plot so don't expect to shed any tears over any character development.
Unfortunately in my opinion the stakes were never extremely high and the tension, even in situations where it should be spiking, was just not enough.
The book did keep my attention though, with its sterile way of narration, almost like a documentary, it helps the reader navigate the new and alien environment of Rama almost without the influence of the characters and events and as if they were there themselves.
This could have easily been in anyone's top10 sci-fi books list if it had a bit more punch to it. But as it stands, Rendezvous with Rama remains a gatekeeper.
Unfortunately, the narrator also follows Clarke's way of writing in his way of narration. The voice was a bit robotic and cold as if the narrator was not invested in the story, making most of the characters seem pretty apathetic and not helping at all in the low-high stakes situations mentioned earlier.

Geniale Geschichte, seltsamer Sprecher.

Sprecher konnte besser sein. Macht seltsame Atempausen und Betonung während der Erzählung die nicht passen.

Monotonous reader kills an already dragging story.

I love scifi, both hard and soft, and was excited to listen to my first C Arthur Clark. One hour in, I am not interested enough in the plot to follow and the monotonous reader's voice keeps making me fall asleep (when I do not want to).
