Inhaltsangabe

Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots?

Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

Michael Kramer tut.

Good, gripping story, which is rather lengthy at times. Listened it for the second time, and I'm not sorry for it.

Organized, flawless, and captivating

The book is clearly written, thoroughly organized, and captivatingly narrated. As all books of Brandon Sanderson, it is a marvellous book.

Story quite okay, narrator horrible!

Compared to other Sanderson works (i.e. the brilliant Stormlight Archive) this book is rather boring and full of lengthy passages, uninteresting characters.
The worst thing about this audio book is the horrible narrator. Cannot stand him a bit, his voice, his pronounciation, his way of speaking. Very bad choice. He is completely unable to breathe any life into the characters.
Not worth listening to, better get the book and read it yourself.

Narrator is irrelevant

Whoever auditioned this person for the recording, must have been deaf. He has the passion and positive energy. But that's where the good news end. Seems like this is his first job. Sounds amateur at best. Immersion or even attachment to what's happening is what you should forget right off the bat. The difference between characters' voices varies from non existent to minor. You often confuse what's narration and what's character line or even who is who when two are speaking. More than two? Good luck. For example Sarene, sometimes he is voicing her with the same voice he uses for narration, sometimes he remembers to slightly alter his voice. Never does he manage to sound like a woman. Sarene's uncle is supposed to sound with a sour throat. He may manage to make him sound like it in a sentence, next sentence he just doesn't bother at all, just goes back to his normal voice. When the uncle introduces Sarene to the rest of his family the audiobook becomes a circus. There are 5 or 6 people in the room and they all sound almost the same. With the exception being the uncle. He just randomly decides now to sound like a cowboy mob chief, in the 1870's, in a salon, describing his fellow gang members the plan for the upcoming train robbery while chewing tobacco and spitting the floor. And keeps this up for the rest of his appearances. Sometimes he also sounds like an old cowboy sitting on his porch, telling stories of the past (while chewing tobacco and spitting on the porch). Parts where the narrator is over-the-top are not scarce. Wherever the book says "he snorted", he doesn't snort. Wherever the book says "he mumbled" he just talks normally. Out of context, out of emotion but always happy to be here recording. He has a habit of leaving out small breaths at the last words of sentences, regardless if he is narrating or acting. Which also adds to the lack of deferentiation between characters and narration and is distracting. His reading is decent but his voice acting is never convincing. He says "my lady" and "sule" 150 times each, in the exact same way. Also, his voice would fit better in childrens' stories. He would still have to improve his acting though. Welcome to the ridiculousness and surrealism of "Leantris: the Rated G adaptation". It's like listening to the Snow white in the land of Mickey mouse edition of Elantris. The book is supposed to be epic and mystical and whatever but here you'll feel like you're listening to the latest Rudolf the reindeer animation movie. Have fun.

The story is interesting but poorly told. Everyone, from the lowest peasant to the greatest kings, is stupid and the only source of ideas, preparations and actions comes from two main protagonists. All other people involved are brain dead or just plain useless and their only part in the book is to ask them questions, execute orders and just be there as mindless puppets who need to be reminded how to breathe, walk and talk. It's the first audiobook I'm listening to on 135% speed and also press the 10 sec forward quite often just to skip the long, boring bartering and useless and boring conversations (narrator's overly enthusiastic tone in everything doesn't help either). Huge chunks of exposition thrown into the book in a rough way, all the clichés you can think of and research. Sanderson wants you to know that he has researched the basics of body language and "How to speak in front of a crowd without anyone falling asleep 101" by awkwardly throwing hints amidst the dialogues. Descriptions of anything are veey scarce and only where absolutely necessary. It's like he had a bullet list of things a book must have and had created pieces for each and threw them in the book in a disjointed way. I intend to read more of him though, I hear he got better after this one.

Amazing Fantasy Debut Novel

I have read this book for the first time at the age of thirteen, and it was a great entry to Sanderson's Cosmere books in general.

It is not the most action-packed book, so while reading it I experienced some lengths and had to fight through those. An audiobook version handles this obviously better, so it didn't bother me too much this time.

The characters are relatable and well-described, and the story is consistent and novel in it's magic system (as we are used to now from Sanderson).

If you love mysterious magic where nobody knows where it comes from, this book isn't for you. I have heard people complain that Sanderson "shoves his magic systems in your face", but I personally love the detailed explanation and almost scientific problem-solving approaches for his magic systems.

Taking into account that this is a debut novel, it is a fantastic story with only minor faults, and I would recommend everyone to read it.

Jack Garett reads it nicely, and well understandable also for Non-Native Speakers like me. Sometimes he doesn't pause between direct speech sentences making it a little bit difficult to deduce which person talks at the moment. It didn't lessen the experience though - since I started listening to audiobooks, this was the most enjoyable week at work I have had so far.

Recommended Read

I am normally not a huge fan of science fiction reads but this book was recommended to me by an acquaintance who usually has similar taste in books, so I decided to give it a try. First thing I noticed was that this was a pretty long audio book which made me fear that it would be too detailed and boring but I have to say that was not the case at all! A little magic, a little love and a little politics, all mixed together in this curious city called Elantris make for an interesting and enjoyable read. So if you want to escape reality and use your imagination, read about Elantris and it’s magical people.

Unbedingt bis zum Ende höhren. Die entfallene Szenen am Ende der Lesung sind sehr interessant.
