Guilty pleasure until it’s just painful (concerns the whole series)
TW: Racism, ableism, sexism
I honestly like the genre and it is my go to place for simply enjoying an easy going fantasy story with some action and a bit of heat.
And since I am not ashamed to admit that I make compromises in order to enjoy some guilty pleasure … I kept on listening through the series even though I had to actively try to ignore the ongoing sexism, racism and a lot more. I hoped that at some point the author would start to deconstruct or even take those issues to overcome something. I do think that she is trying to „criticize“ to some degree but the result is just a lot (and I mean A LOT) of reproduction of discrimination, derivative language, slurs and racism. Without having a meaningful impact to the story. If I need to hear one more time how the way someone is sitting being described as „ind… style“ I think I might vomit. And a lot of times she does not even seem to know that using this kind of langue is discriminatory since it is used casually and absent minded.
I still kept listening because in order to write a review like this I did not want to judge prematurely but I finally reached my breaking point at the leisurely way in which euthanasia was not implied but becoming a theme and when she ran out of ideas ableism becomes the main topic.
I do not understand how in the present times it is possible that someone is allowed to spread such narratives on a prominent platform like this.
That being said: Even without all of this, it is not enough to have a good idea and great worldbuilding. As a writer I know what I am talking about and technically (like in the writing/dramaturgy and even worldbuilding and continuity) the author does not deliver. There is potential in it. But story and author need work, a damn good sensitivity read and someone to explain that there are more ways to entertain and immerse that contributing to dangerous narratives that at the end of the day harm people. Mentally and physically.
