Inhaltsangabe

From the best-selling author of The Black Swan and one of the foremost thinkers of our time, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a book on how some things actually benefit from disorder.

In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish.

Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner. The antifragile is immune to prediction errors. Why is the city-state better than the nation-state, why is debt bad for you, and why is everything that is both modern and complicated bound to fail? The audiobook spans innovation by trial and error, health, biology, medicine, life decisions, politics, foreign policy, urban planning, war, personal finance, and economic systems. And throughout, in addition to the street wisdom of Fat Tony of Brooklyn, the voices and recipes of ancient wisdom, from Roman, Greek, Semitic, and medieval sources, are heard loud and clear.

Extremely ambitious and multidisciplinary, Antifragile provides a blueprint for how to behave - and thrive - in a world we don't understand, and which is too uncertain for us to even try to understand and predict. Erudite and witty, Taleb's message is revolutionary: What is not antifragile will surely perish.

Kritikerstimmen

"[This] is the lesson of Taleb...and also the lesson of our volatile times. There is more courage and heroism in defying the human impulse, in taking the purposeful and painful steps to prepare for the unimaginable." (Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point)

"[Taleb writes] in a style that owes as much to Stephen Colbert as it does to Michel de Montaigne." (The Wall Street Journal)

"The most prophetic voice of all.... [Taleb is] a genuinely significant philosopher...someone who is able to change the way we view the structure of the world through the strength, originality and veracity of his ideas alone." (GQ)

"How to survive black swan events"

The definition and examples of antifragile fit well to the thinking of engineers. Don't try to avoid black swans instead build things that even gain from black swan events.
Very impressive and easy to follow examples.
Like the author Nassim Taleb, I suggest to read this book before the black swan series.

"Antifragility of systems - certainly a concept which will become more popular soon."

    Taleb at his best!
One of the most skeptical and most thought provoking thinkers of our time. I like the part about finding heuristics for detecting fragility (concave) of systems. The importance of non-linearities in our world are perhaps highly underestimated.

Black Swan was the first book I read. Then came Antifragile. Now one of his first pieces (Fooled by randomness). All three are must reads. Enjoy getting wiser/more skeptical ;-)

    "More of this"

speaker is clear to underrstand but sometimes too fast in passages with highly sophisticated explanations....very interesting concept very self confident brought forward. a little bit of self reflection and self criticism would make the author more trustworthy....as the author is obviously very clever thanks to his genes it would bee fine comsidering this when blaming others.

Hope that ther will be more books from Taleb. My wish theme would be on the concept of free will

    "Eureka !"

In the book, Nassim Taleb makes solid proof of this claim that he has found the Philosopher's stone. In this extraordinary mix between knowledge and common sense the author shows humanity that true wisdom is not a prerogative of institutions but a result of curiosity and inquisitiveness. A manifest against the vanity of cretain brands of intellectual pursuit, a praise for the inteligence of the crowds, but at the same time a warning sign for the blind spots in any theory. In short: true alchimist tradition revisited.

    "posttraumatic growth + real options"

While the term antifragile makes sense in the (fragile vs. antifragile, -1 vs +1) context, I really fell in love with the term 'posttraumatic growth'. While you would usually want to avoid trauma in every aspect of life, seeking antifragility turns these strong negative emotions into something extremely positive. Additionally, real options are a very interesting topic. The chapters about academia, banks & government bailouts are very good in their essence, but could have been a little shorter.
