A must have for all Lovecraft fans

Collection of fresh and original shortstories that perfectly manage to recreate the tension and atmosphere of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, featuring some nice twists and new ideas without loosing the connection to the original stories.

Definitiv ein Volltreffer

Dieses Buch hat alles! Gangster, Marines, Weltraumpiraten, Pornographie,
gleich 2 Apokalypsen und das allerwichtigste, es hat ein paar verdammt gute und clevere Geschichten.

Wie bei Anthologien kaum zu vermeiden unterscheiden sich die einzelnen Stories nicht nur in der Länge sondern auch in der Qualität, und leider ist das ganze Spektrum abgedeckt, von "mein Kopf explodiert vor Begeisterung" bis hin zu "ist das euer Ernst?".

Eines muss jedoch dazu gesagt werden, die 3 Geschichten die sich jetzt angsprochen fühlen sollten sind nicht per-se schlecht, eigentlich im Gegenteil, alle Geschichten in dieser Sammlung sind kompetent bis exeptionel gut geschrieben. das Probelm ist philosophischer Natur, die Autoren dieser Geschichten haben offenbar ihre Hausaufgaben nicht gemacht und nicht verstanden was kosmischen Horros ausmacht.
Ich will keine Namen nennen aber die eine Geschichte ist eine misslunge Pastiche, die nächste verwandelt Nyarlathothep in einen John-Sinclair-Bösewicht (kein Witz, die Geschichte hätte so auch von Jason Dark kommen können) und die dritte enthält schlichtweg kein einziges lovecraftianisches Element.

Jedoch was die anderen Autoren aus dem Tableau machen ist schlichtweg fantastisch, eher klassiche aber sehr athmosphärische Stories wechseln sich ab mit gnadenlos geistreichen Neuinterpreationen und Hommages und hin und wieder kommt etwas so wunderbar anderes
und verblüffend neues daher das einem der Speichel stockt.

Zur Umsetzung: Fleet Cooper macht seine Sache hervorragend, er hat für jede Situation den richtigen Ton, Teresa DeBerys Vortragsweise ist am anfang etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, kann hin und wieder ins monotone abrutschen, ist aber im allgemeinen mehr als solide.

Als Wort der Warnung sei noch gesagt, einige dieser Geschichten erfordern eine gute bis sehr gute Kenntniss der originalen Lovecraft-Stories, ok gut da hätte man auch drauf kommen können...
Die Sprache ist definitiv kein Schul-Englisch stellt aber auch einen Zweitsprchler, wie mich selbst, vor nicht allzu große Schwierigkeiten.

Für das was dieses Buch sein will, ein Schaukasten von dem was man mit Lovecrafts Methode und seinem Universum machen kann, ist es ein Volltreffer.
Ist es perfekt? Ein deutliches Nein!
Ist es ein Muss für jeden Lovecraftian Scholar? Ein absolutes Ja!

A Mixed Bag of Mythos Tales

For a fan if the works if H. P. Lovecraft, a warning should be given prior to any discussion of the contents of this anthology: not all if these stories contained within it are lovecraftian horror. Nor are they all even any sort of horror or even clearly related to the expanded Mythos Universe.

That being said, there are some brilliant works in here, some truly lovecraftian tales, and even those that do not do the Mythos justice are still well written. While I did not enjoy those tales that felt like they didn't fit the spirit of Lovecraft, they did present an interesting new take on the mythos. Ergo, I would still reccommend this collection.

For myself, the most egregious example of a story going against what is 'lovecraftian' was "The Nyarlathotep Event". While I found the tale entertaining in a manner reminiscent of the macabre nihilistic humor also found in works like "John Dies at the End" and "The Laundry Files", it's about humans killing Nyarlathotep. At no point in a story should any one human merely be able to off a Great Old One. It cheapens the gods of the mythos far too much to let them die so easily.

However, stories like "Once more from the Top" and "The Black Brat of Dunwhich" carry this collection and make it well worth the price of admission. I don't want to spoil either tale, but they both expand upon the after-shocks of some of Lovecraft's grander tales and do an excellent job of it.

There were many more stories of good quality and varying degrees of lovecraftian influence beyond the few I mentioned, and I wholeheartedly advise any fan of the Mythos to form their own opinion of this collection.

in conclusion, the performance of this piece should be adressed, as a good performance is imperative to the enjoyment of any audiobook. Luckily, the performance here is very good. Both narrators speak clearly in very even tones that are easy on the ears without being tiring. It is always apparent which character is speaking. My only complaint was that within one or two stories narrated by Ms. DeBerry she did not pause for quite long enough to indicate the sudden change in setting the story threw at the listener, although this is probably more due to the eclectic writing style than unconventional or incorrect reading.

If lovecraftian tales appeal to you, this is certainly a collection to listen to.
