Inhaltsangabe

Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O'Brian's now famous Aubrey/Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written.

It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship's surgeon and an intelligence agent. It contains all the action and excitement which could possibly be hoped for in a historical novel, but it also displays the qualities which have put O'Brian far ahead of any of his competitors: his depiction of the detail of life aboard a Nelsonic man-of-war, of weapons, food, conversation, and ambience, of the landscape, and of the sea. O'Brian's portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. His power of characterisation is above all masterly.

This brilliant historical novel marked the debut of a writer who grew into one of our greatest novelists ever.

    "Superbly read - sadly abbreviated"

I love the Aubrey/Maturin series to pieces, and am usually a bit wary with audiobooks/readings of books I know so well and love so much. For me personally, much depends on the voice of the reader and the way he/she goes about it.
In this regard, this audiobook is one of the best I have ever heard, and would merit the full five stars: Robert Hardy is the perfect voice for it, and he does the characters, situations, and storytelling wonderfully justice.

On the other hand, though, this audiobook has one of the largest flaws an audiobook can have for me: it is abbreviated. For this reason I give it three stars only.
Why oh why has this been done? I absolutely dislike abbreviations in general - and for a Patrick O'Brian novel, it's a sin. How can you do that to this wonderful prose and deprive the listener from deligthful descriptions and scenes really missing in the storytelling?

I've also tried samples of the other Patrick O'Brian reading available here, since some of these are unabbreviated. But either the reader's voice and/or the storytelling doesn't work for me; and I also wouldn't want to start a series when I'm not sure to get all parts read by the same voice.
