Inhaltsangabe

An epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

King says he wanted to know what happened to Danny Torrance, the boy at the heart of The Shining, after his terrible experience in the Overlook Hotel. The instantly riveting Doctor Sleep picks up the story of the now middle-aged Dan, working at a hospice in rural New Hampshire, and the very special 12-year old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless - mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the 'steam' that children with the 'shining' produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him and a job at a nursing home where his remnant 'shining' power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes 'Doctor Sleep'. Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival....

    "Klare Empfehlung für deutsche Hörer"

Wer der englischen Sprache einigermaßen mächtig und nicht völlig David Nathan verfallen ist, sollte hier zugreifen. Will Patton liest mindestens genauso gut und da in der Übersetzung erfahrungsgemäß immer ein bisschen verloren geht, ist diese Ausgabe eindeutig die bessere Wahl!

"perhaps if you are a die-hard fan of The Shining.."

I'm a Stephen King fan, I have read most of his books. This one is a let-down, it feels like King still owed his publisher a book, so he delivered one. Yet without the usual intriguing setting, well-crafted characters, or coherent story-line, this novel feels neglected.

Perhaps if you are a die-hard fand of The Shining, this supposed follow-up will grip you but aside from the protagonist, the connection to The Shining seems weaker than the one between 11.22.63 and It to me. I did not care about any character and I did not find the True Knots the least bit scary.

The True Knots are discribed as psychic vampires, and that's just as tired as it sounds. They are sort of like the little guys in Insomnia but with weird nicknames and costumes, somewhere between carnies and gypsies. Danny Torrance from The Shining is a recovering addidct who uses his 'shining' to make dying easier for the residents of the hospice where he works (hence his nickname, Doctor Sleep). Then there is Abra, a little girl, who also has the 'shining' but much stronger than Danny. She contacts Danny and they have been psychic friends for years before they (re-)connect to battle the True Knots.

Maybe it's because the narrator gave many of the True Knots annoying carricature-voices but I could not take them seriously, and if I can't take the evil forces seriously, the good vs evil battle becomes redundant - and with it the entire story.
