Inhaltsangabe

A new biography of Western literature's most iconic writer, from the acclaimed novelist and author of About Schmidt.

Kafkaesque: the very word evokes tortuous bureaucracy, crushing self-doubt, and an almost unbearable inadequacy in the face of higher powers. After Kafka, it can be said, literature was not the same. In the few novels and short stories he left behind, he distilled the horrors of the new age. Kafka's is the voice of the outsider that is, the voice of each one of us at once defined by its affiliations and completely, utterly alone.

The product of both a transitional age (the beginning of the 20th century) and a territory in flux (Czechoslovakia), Kafka spoke and wrote German in Czech territory. He was a Jew among Christians, a non-observant Jew among believers.

Louis Begley, himself a multilingual exile and, like Kafka, a lawyer and writer, renders Kafka's life with sensitivity and insight. Begley's discussion of Kafka's masterpiece The Trial, along with shorter works such as "The Metamorphosis," opens a window on a tormented soul, one of the most intriguing figures of the modern period.

    "Good book, reader lacks pronounciation"

The book gives a biography, closely staying at what Kafka has written, with extensive quotes from his work, diaries and letters. Especially the last chapter (by far my favourite in this book) shines with empathy for the writer Kafka and remarkable insights into his world and work by another writer.
Dave Giorgio does a decent job as a reader, finding an appropriate voice and intonation for the text - warm, calm, in a low key, but not monotonous. Unfortunately nobody has told him, that German, Czech and French words are pronounced differently than English. German names and words inserted by Begley and a French quote are read one to one as if they were English words. For instance "Deiner" (informal german for "yours") and "Weimar" (German city, giving name to the first democracy in Germany and once a cultural center of the country) have to be read like [dainer] and [waimar] not as [di:ner] and [wi:mar] (and those are just words I could identify, lots of others were completely unrecognizable), and in the French "est" (=is) the 'st' is (usually) silent. This turns most of the european names, words and short quotes into gibberish. In the description of the book Louis Begley is touted as multilingual. Mr . Giorgio seems to be completely ignorant of other languages and nobody was able or took the effort to give him an even basic idea of how to pronounce non-english words.
