Fantastic and truly engulfing short stories

This is a very memorable and original collection of 17 short stories, presented by different readers. This is my first book of this author, and also by a Japanese author. I enjoyed his stories very much, due to their uniqueness. They have been written between 1983 and 1990, and this sometime shows (references to records being played). All stories are being told in the first person narrative which made them even more believable to me. They start as some normal every-day event which then swings into a totally different direction, in some cases even into the fantasy genre (The little green monster), or into the protagonist's weird, but still very plausible, mindset (e.g. The TV people or Sleep). All of them are gripping, well described and well read. Some are longer, some are shorter, and sometimes they ended too abruptly for me. I wished that there would have been a bit of a "breather" in between stories, as I was still fully engulfed in the previous story when the next one started already. But, despite of this, a truly recommendable book which has made me curious of Murakami's other books.
