The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.
When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother's identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.
After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future altogether: her brother's abandoned greatness.

Ein hervorragender Roman
Mitreißend, tiefgründig, die eigene Weltsicht hinterfragend. Etwas mehr facettenreichtum hätte den Nebencharakteren (bestem Freund, Prince of radiance...) gut zu Gesicht gestanden. Auf den nächsten Titel freue ich mich sehr.

Klang vielversprechend… hört sich leider recht eintönig
Die Sprecherin ist für meinen Geschmack nicht abwechslungsreich genug. Zwischenzeitlich fällt es wirklich schwer, die unterschiedlichen Charaktere zu unterscheiden, weil die Stimme zumeist (bis auf wenige Ausnahmen) bei allen männlichen und allen weiblichen Charakteren jeweils gleich klingt. Die Geschichte ist ok, aber reißt mich nicht wirklich mit, sondern tröpfelt so dahin (obwohl ich nicht sicher bin, ob das an der Sprecherin liegt). Leider kommt trotz Schlachten und Intrigen nicht wirklich Spannung auf. Schade, weil die beschriebene Welt so interessant klang.
Möchte aber trotzdem festhalten, dass es weder eine schlechte Geschichte noch wirklich schlecht gelesen ist. Die Geschichte hat sicher ihre Leserschaft und reinhören schadet nicht.

This book is masterfully written in multiple ways and I really can't wait for the sequel!
The plot is gripping, the main characters amazingly well written. The emotions invoked by their struggles and the insight the reader is given to their feelings are as beautiful as they are sad, and quite unique.
I especially recommend this book to people on the rainbow spectrum, or people who try to understand. The two main characters' struggles with societal gender expectations, their identities and the pain that comes from being imprisoned in a body that doesn't resemble you, the special emotions and conflicts that go on within someone like that VS the joy of piecing yourself together after a lifetime of pain and dissociation because of it... well, the author did nothing short of a phenomenal job in conveying these feelings. A satisfying fantasy read
I can probably only add to the others praising this book. It is well written, the characters are complex and the exploration of identity, gender and belonging feel very well put together. I can only agree with what others have said, this book is a great read and comes to a satisfying end. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that I was somewhat disappointed that many of the battles towards the middle/end of the book are never described but instead we only ever witness the aftermath or are told how the battles fared. I understand the choice in doing such as they probably would not have built much character but it still felt like I was missing something. I liked the romance in the book a lot and damn I did not expect the spicy scene to be that spicy. Highly recommend!
