Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Language, intricate and non-repetitive metaphors, storyline!
I have not been rooting for the main character so much in a really long time. Everything felt real and visual, it was like watching a movie. Looking at best read of the year

A must read
I don't normally enjoy books based on other books, let alone when the original book is one of my favourites, but this book is epic. David Copperfield remains a mountain of a manuscript and one which throws my emotions into a twist every chapter. Demon is different, thankfully, and in keeping with its time, just as Dickens' masterpiece was.
My biggest complimenta to Barbara Kingsolver.

Masterpiece
This is the third book of Barbara Kingsolver I have read and it was the best. It is a deeply moving and tragic story of Damon, a boy growing up in Lee county, Virginia, as a son to a mother struggeling with addiction. It is at times very hard to listen to the scenes that describe realities of poverty, violence and addiction, but this book draws you into a world that most of us do not know with such empathy and a precision. The characters of this book will stay with me for a long time.

A fabulous read, in all senses of the word!
Don’t be put off by the title. Instead, trust that this is Kingsolver at her absolute best. The story was gripping and very edifying, the narrator‘s performance was brilliant, he drew me in from first to last. I am so glad I listened to this instead of reading it in my own mental voice. For me, the best fiction truly immerses you in a universe that is absolutely real and “of our world,” and yet completely alien to my own experience. This book achieves this beautifully.

Großartig!
Möglicherweise ihr bestes Buch! Die Geschichte zieht die Leserin ab dem ersten Satz herein. Tragisch, hoffnungsvoll, inspirierend und auch versöhnlich. Hervorragend gelesen.
